Blackthorne, three months later.
Sylvester crouched down, ignoring the protest from his knee, and took the first boy—Ivan—to make it to him into his arms. Then there was Ano, then Julio, and Sylvester tried not to be pleased at the way they were clearly ready to elbow each other out of the way for attention if necessary.
Kalvin came last and lingered longest, face tucked into Sylvester for a brief moment. When Sylvester stood, trying and likely failing to make the action graceful, he left a hand down on Kalvin's shoulder.
The others were still talking half-over each other, all of them trying to convey something different to him and each trying to cajole him inside. Sylvester let himself be tugged along amicably, Ano's hand on his free sleeve, as he tried to keep up well enough to acknowledge everything they said.
