Summary
“I didn’t say I minded, uh, sharing a bed with you.” Robby scratches at his beard and tries not to look at Jack. It’s hard because Jack isn’t even looking at the road; he’s smiling sideways at him.
“Don’t worry. I don’t kick.”
“I think the phrase is ‘I don’t bite’.”
Jack’s grin widens.
“That’s the problem. I do bite.”
Robby fears his recovery is going to feel very long.

Summary
Dennis's words climb back up. "You just… you assume things, you make decisions, you act like you know what's best for everyone—"
Robby's gaze is fixed on him. Dennis's broad shoulders are coiled tight; there’s an angry, pink flush creeping up his neck; his long fingers keep clenching into fists and unclenching at his sides.
"—and you don't even see how fucking condescending that is, how it makes me feel like I'm— like I'm not even a person to you, just some project—"
Robby watches Dennis unwravel under the weak spill of the streetlight filtering in through the window, his curls flashing copper and gold, his voice hoarse and furious and he knows he should calm him down, shout back, beg for forgiveness.
But he can't.
He's never seen anything more beautiful.or: robby comes back from his sabbatical to find dennis whitaker absolutely furious with him. this is, unexpectedly, not the worst thing that's ever happened to him

Robby watches him for a second. Then, before his brain can catch up with his mouth—
“I could kiss you.”
Silence.
Robby’s gone completely still and Whitaker just stares at him, eyes wide.
Robby’s stomach drops. “I—” He huffs out a breath and drags a hand down his face. “I don’t know why I—”
“You’d—” Whitaker cuts in. “You’d do that?”or: robby gives dennis his first kiss to ease his nerves about a date. then he spends a month losing his mind over every little thing dennis does

Summary
It begins to go quiet as he’s sedated, voice going softer and softer until he’s unconscious. Abbot and a few nurses exit after a few moments. Looking in, Robby’s unconscious form is sprawled on the bed. He looks so small in there, he looks so incapable of the anger he was just spewing. Dennis swallows and a tear pushes its way out. What did he just do?

Summary
As Dennis scrolled down his feed, the feeling dawned on him. The one that he’d encountered last summer, when he’d walked out across the sweet grass meadow, barefoot and battling his love of the flat, open world of Nebraska. In stark contrast with the purpose he felt in the city. Purpose and community. But Pittsburgh would never sound like cooing mourning doves settled on the tin roof of the shed, their little feet tapping as they called out. It wouldn’t smell like fertiliser and mown grass on a Sunday after his dad got back from church. And it wouldn’t ever feel like lying in the field out back of the farmhouse, understanding that everything existed for a reason, even the grass tickling his ankles and the ladybirds dawdling over his knucklebones.

Summary
If anyone were to ask Robby how he felt within his relationship with Whitaker, Robby always knows what the first thing he’d say is.
Dennis Whitaker can do so much better than him.
That isn’t to say Robby isn’t very happy that the younger man has picked him to be in a relationship with. He is very happy. This doesn’t stop him from also being severely shocked when it was Dennis pursuing him the first time they did, well, anything really. Of course, the fact that Dennis was even into him at all typically had Robby scratching his head in confusion.
