Chris raises her eyebrows, amusement crossing her face as she says, “Have fun,” in that slight, teasing intone he’s long since grown used to. Dalton nods, taking another step towards the door. Her amusement only seems to grow at how slowly he’s moving, lips twitching into something of a smile. “Dalton.”
“I’m going.” He doesn’t move any closer to the door, though. “I just,” he swallows, mouth dry, and before he can talk himself out of it, he’s crossing the space between them. “I’ll be back,” he tells her firmly, dipping to kiss her cheek softly. He lingers for a second. It’s uncharacteristic for him, he’s not the kind to initiate contact very often, much less this kind of contact, but it’s fine, because the way Chris’s smile only grows in response to it makes his chest warm pleasantly and his embarrassment worth it.
