Summary
Made by me and evenpeaks on the Hunter: the Parenting fan server! Credit goes to him as much as me for this idea.
This AU begins pretty much from two premises:
- Marckus is a widderslainte.
- Being kept by his mother might actually be worse for him than canon.His mom, Astrid, is an accomplished Etherite mage who met D and the family in late 1975, when she was in her mid-twenties. While she had a bit of a whirlwind romance with D, it rapidly went to shit, and that resulted in their unceremonious divorce (Astrid whipping out the death ray and giving D an hour to collect his things). In the canon timeline, Astrid gives the newborn Marckus to D to raise (with information for Marckus when he awakens to contact her), but in this AU, she keeps him.
Since ideas reproduce faster than a virus in my skull, this story has multiple points of divergence. The biggest one is whether Marckus actually falls to the Caul — therefore, fics and oneshots with him as a Nephandi will be specified as such.. Happy reading!

“The author of the journals,” Stan said, finally standing up. "My brother."
The author of the journals, his brother, looked at the miniscule crowd that had arrived by accident to greet him. The author looked between them all, and Dipper could see reflection on his face from the light of the slowly dimming portal. The author’s gaze finally settled on Stan, and his posture stiffened.
“Dad?” The author of the journals, his brother, choked out. He sounded absolutely baffled.
Stan’s expression turned equally baffled, clearly not anticipating this. “What?”
*** *** ***
The portal has opened, and spat out Stanford Filbrick Pines, exactly as he was when he left. Thirty years has passed for the outside world, but only a few hours have been lost for him.
It changes things. Especially with the worst memories of Ford's life still hot on his tail, and eager to make a reappearance.

Summary
The kids fall through the portal, and Stanley chases after them. He will not lose them the way he lost his brother.
Refusing to repeat the mistake of 30 years ago, the family becomes stranded in the multiverse, stuck without a clear path home. Stan's got his brother back, at least, but Stanford isn't the same as Stan remembers. Looks the same, sure, talks the same, absolutely - but he's got a 'professional working relationship' with Bill Cipher that Stan'd really rather not interrogate, and seems to have changed his whole vibe from Virgin Loser, to Space Cowboy Wizard; Which isn't all that different, now that Stan thinks about it.
Stan and Ford must now find a way to kill Bill, get the family back to Earth, and try to keep the ghosts of their past from tearing them apart. Again. Same boat, different planks, and neither one can deal with their own reflection in the water.
Well, whatever. They can handle this.
