Love is something that happens in Maxwell’s favourite stories. It’s something bigger than the whole world and it stretches his imagination out past dusty pages and trimmed lawns to a sky overflowing with possibility. It blooms in the most unexpected places and it is always a good thing.
But love cannot bloom in a barren bed, and the Gotch family tree is withered and blighted and loveless. If only Maxwell were clever enough to realise that it’s hopeless, then perhaps it wouldn’t hurt so much.

Dess signs, after a few faltering starts, “Asriel called me.”
“Huh?” Kris blinks, watching as Dess repeats the signs. “Oh. Uh. That’s cool.”
Dess shrugs. It has started to pace in the center of their room, to their window, their door, a straight-line loop. They catch her signs as she passes them, a start-and-stop. “His roommate. Went on a vacation for a few weeks. And Asriel—offered. For me to stay with him. Until the roommate is back.”
Kris—
Freezes. Like, full-body, the chill races up their spine and every bit of them goes rigid. Asriel is far, far, everyone is far, too-far, but Dess—Dess has stayed right in Hometown with them from the start, the only one of them who didn’t belong anywhere, even with the end of the world, even with Light and Dark cracked open, no boundaries between the two anymore. She was supposed to turn back into the girl she was before she left, but it never, ever did.
Kris was supposed to be a human.

oh my GOD oh my god. this is so good. everyone is characterized so well? berdly misinterpreting noelle/coming up with his own narrative regarding their relationship starting from when they were kids, the moments where kris is desperately trying to disobey the player, subvert the player's commands, and the conversation at the end, where they apologize, but still can't explain things to him for the same reasons they couldn't explain to noelle...this is Really good. as far as chapter 5 scenarios go, this feels like it could be canon.

PERIHELION...!!!! by far one of my favorite interpretations of ART having AI family relations. i loved how perihelion immediately took an interest in iris and was disappointed when she had to leave, more so than when it and aphelion were told seth had to. i also loved how in the 3rd story aphelion manages to give the single most frightening 'shovel talk' conceived and how it gave itself the time to talk to peri. some good shit
