“How long are you back for?” Megumi asked and Gojo fought the urge to hug him tighter.

He looked at Yaga expectantly, like the man would have any clue but the principal was extremely distracted.

“Earth to Yaga?” Gojo exclaimed, confused by his previous teacher’s zoning out.

    Yaga blinked groggily.

    “Sorry, what was the question?”

Gojo frowned, no words, but eyes questioning.

“Megumi just reminded me of someone.” Yaga admitted.

    Gojo laughed at that.

“I’ve heard that a lot recently.” Megumi grumbled to himself.

“Come on Megs, I know it's not ideal to be like Yaga but we can’t all be Gojo Satoru.”

    Megumi rolled his eyes, exaggeratedly.

“Not what I meant.” Yaga muttered, picking up Panda in the process.

“Come on Yaga, don’t be embarrassed.” Gojo teased.

    Hello Gojo-san.” Panda greeted, politely.

Megumi looked up for a split second, nodded his head in acknowledgement and turned back to his Legos.

He got a nod of acknowledgement.

    What an improvement.

Gojo couldn’t contain himself, crouching onto the ground and wrapping Megumi in a hug.

“Gross.” Megumi murmured but he didn’t make any effort to push Gojo off.

“What? No hello for your guardian.”

    Megumi shook his head.

“It's been two weeks Gumi, two whole weeks.”

    “They went fast.” Megumi deadpanned.

“You little shit.” Gojo chastised but he knew he was smiling. “I bet you weren’t like this for Nanami.”

“Well I actually like Nanami.” Megumi replied, continuing back to building the lego set, completely ignoring the fact that Gojo was resting his head on his shoulder so he could watch what he was doing.

    Bookmarker's Notes

He’d found out his childhood was bad after he arrived at Tokyo Tech, where other students and teachers would look at him in horror when he talked about it while laughing because he didn’t know any better. Stories about his training, which would go on for days on end, being withheld food until he perfected the movement being taught, were met with pitied looks and unease. And when he spoke of the morals he was raised with, they would change the subject. He’d stopped speaking about it rapidly, figuring out that others didn’t relate – that it wasn’t normal. It wasn’t normal to be ripped away from his mother’s care at age five to begin training to be the strongest. It wasn’t normal to expect the world from a child – ripping away his youth from him before he even learned how to write.

Shoko and Suguru had reacted the best, thankfully, as they didn’t straight-up pretend he never said anything. They had taken the time to explain to him that he had a bad childhood, and as a result, would let Satoru indulge in more childish activities. They hadn’t brushed it off, hadn’t told him it was how the world worked, that he was the strongest, and that his childhood was a sacrifice for the greater good. No, they made sure he knew they cared about him and would never expect anything of him – that he was Satoru to them, not the strongest – it was a weird thing to be told, at age fourteen, that he didn’t need to be what everyone expected of him. Three years later, he still struggled to figure out who he was if not a weapon of the jujutsu word.

"We are connected," snaps Mai. "We’re basically one sorcerer. We have the same cursed energy. I have it. It comes from me.”

Maki’s eyes grow wide. “From you?”

“That's why your physical giftedness is half-assed. Because I'm still alive so you’ll never actually reach 0 no matter what you try."

    "Huh?"

She rolls her eyes. "It's fine," she says and it strikes Maki that she’s being unusually chatty. "I'll be sure to die before you so you'll get a chance to enjoy it for a bit at least—What's with that look?"

    "What?"

"Don't look at me like that. You want to be strong enough to be the Head of the clan, right? Sorry, you're going to have to wait a few more years. I actually want to graduate before I go."

Maki’s hands tremble. None of this makes any sense. It doesn’t make any sense and she doesn’t want it to, because if it does...

    "What are you talking about?"

    Mai sighs, long-suffering.

"You," she says. "The power that Gojo Satoru sees in you? Can't be unlocked while I'm alive. Because you need to have no cursed energy and I'm your source of cursed energy. So you can train as hard as you want but you'll never get much stronger than you are now."

The boy shifts on his feet. “The year is two thousand and eighteen? Common Era?”

Slowly, smile still plastic on his face, Suguru faces Satoru. This fucking dumbass. “Satoru,” he says, dangerous edge to his voice, “what did you do?

Satoru makes some bastardization of a sound, half between a laugh and a cough. “...Whoops?”

“I,” Suguru grits, pinching two fingers together, “am this close to mass murder.” He’s joking. Probably.
