Confusion falls over Joe and so he stays silent, and looks back to the window, where the shadows have fallen heavier over the branches and ivy crawling up trunks and in the dimness of the setting sun the once pink flower blossoms now look a deep magenta. For a moment he hopes she is just talking to herself, or thinking out loud, and then in the subsequent moments realizes it is not so.
And with reluctance: “Go where?”
“To Alto Nido. I want to see.”

She almost wants to indulge Madeline in a match. She almost wants to hit her in the eye with a tennis ball, because her coach won’t be there and she can say it was just an accident. She almost wants to ditch her engagement dinner and her low expectations, for a good, low-stakes rally.
And anyways, Helen prefers listening to Madeline grunt while hitting a ball than she does hearing Ernest grunt as he comes.

Sometimes it all gets mixed up and he doesn’t know if he's making Salomé for her or if she’s doing it for him. As if maybe she's throwing him a bone from under the table, like when she buys him a full-sized bottle of Tom Ford he didn't even ask for and now he has to figure out how to make up something like that to her, she who is post-money, post-anything, when the only thing she wants is what she cannot have. Sometimes he grows very afraid she will tell him to leave. Sometimes he thinks maybe there is this terrible monster lurking between them, contorted and grotesque, only kept at bay because neither of them will say its name.

The first time Joe dies, he’s dead before he hits the ground.
He’s gone before he can feel Norma’s hands clawing at his lifeless body, before the blood (his) and saliva (hers) drips from her open mouth. He feels none of it. He feels nothing at all.
Joe, for what may be the first time, is lucky. Fittingly, it’s also the last thing he ever is.
Joe Gillis is very good at dying.
