“So, if he’s not your boyfriend, does that mean he’s single?”

Eddie’s stomach churns at the question.

    “Um, well—”

    Tom cuts him off.

“Do you think he’d say yes if I asked him out?”

Eddie doesn't know why he does it. He just knows that the idea of this man, Tom, wanting to ask Buck out makes him feel like he's going to throw up, so before he can even think about it, he blurts out—

“Oh, sorry, man, I just meant that he’s my husband, not my boyfriend.”

or; When Buck and Eddie are in Nashville for the firefighter competition, Eddie accidentally tells one of the other firefighters that he and Buck are married. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

“Were you, uh, dreaming just now?”

    Eddie clears his throat.

“Yeah,” he lies, because what is he supposed to say? The truth? He pushes himself up, still keeping himself angled away, scrubbing his palm down his face. “Yeah, I think I was.”

At the very least, it isn’t broad daylight, so his cheeks won’t betray how goddamn hot his face is. He looks over at Buck; the dashboard of the Jeep and the moon in the sky cast a soft glow on his features.

With a sidelong look, a sly little smile pulls at Buck’s lips. “Sounded like it mighta been a good one,” he teases, wagging his eyebrows.

Halfway through their drive from El Paso to LA, Buck gives Eddie permission to let go.

He stands up, because Eddie does not cower from knocks at — he checks his phone — 10:52 PM, even though every true crime podcast his abuela forwards him suggests this is exactly how people end up as a Dateline episode.

    He looks through the peephole.

    He blinks.

    He looks again.

There is a man on his porch. Which, fine, he expected a man. What he did not expect is for the man to be — and Eddie needs a second here, because he’s processing several things simultaneously and doing a poor job with all of them — approximately six foot two, broad-shouldered, narrow-waisted, visibly muscular in a way that suggests either a dedicated gym routine or a genetic lottery win or both, and completely, entirely, spectacularly naked.

Except for the potted succulent he's holding in front of his crotch.

Eddie's succulent. From Eddie's porch. The one Chris named Potricia.

    Or,
The odds of the universe dropping a naked man on your doorstep are low, but never zero.

“Hey, Diaz? Take it from someone who’s been there — it’s not as scary as you think it’ll be.”

Eddie frowns. He glances at Buck, as if Buck has any idea what Tommy is talking about. “What’s not?”

“I like to think I’m uniquely positioned to say it’s worth it.”

Or, Buck is not in love with his best friend, and Eddie is super straight. For sure. Definitely.

    Summary

Eddie’s shovelling the first heap of pasta into his mouth, quietly pleased he made it through that conversation a lot more easily than anticipated, when Chim chirps up: “A physio probably makes more sense than a doctor.”

Beside him, Hen scoffs. “Excuse you!”

“I’m just saying! Let’s save the GP visits for those who really need them.”

“Or an occupational therapist,” Ravi suggests, and Eddie’s sure it’s to stave off a Chim-Hen showdown. “Even a massage therapist would probably help.”

And then Maddie says, “Buck used to be a massage therapist” and everyone goes quiet, heads all swinging in Buck’s direction.
