Nearly a year after the discovery of the permanence code, Eve Kim celebrates her fortieth birthday. Though she is the CEO of a successful company, and ENCOM is leading the way in making a great many wonderful advances in the world thanks to the legacy of her and her sister's work, she can't help but feel regret that she has no one to share it with. Or rather, she regrets that the one person she would want to share it with is still absent from her life. In the brief time they were together, Ares had made her feel needed and valued again, but with that came the gradual awareness that she needed something, too.

“Based on your metabolic rate, pupil dilation, respiration, and fine motor tremors, you appear to be having a response to me that is…” His eyes run up and down my body, those long eyelashes sweeping with the motion before his gaze finally comes to rest on my mouth, “sexual in nature. Is my assessment correct?”
“Uh…” I’m at a loss for words, regretting every decision of my life that has led me to this moment.
“Yes. I see. This sexual arousal is a response to my words and presence?”
I don’t dare answer. I would rather eat glass than tell him the truth, but lying won’t work on him. He’s effectively a living lie detector.
His gaze sharpens, and he shifts closer to me, eyes never moving from my face. “Is that arousal a response to me? For me?”
I cannot get enough air. He’s figured it out, likely based solely on my physiological reactions and mannerisms.
With his amazing intelligence and knowledge of me, Ares had intuited my most closely-guarded secret; that I’m a weak meat-sack who can’t control her hormones.
