Summary
a dog runs across an open field on earth and down a corridor on a space station in a starless sky. perhaps it is the same dog.
It has been around four years since the Hail Mary launched.
Eva Stratt is at the lowest point in her life. Trapped in a gilded birdcage of a prison, she feels like she's drowning in boredom and her currently unmedicated mental illness. Suddenly a wound in the air opens in her room, and brings with it blood, change and a strange woman.
Ava died. She died with the voice of the woman she once loved blasting through her eardrums and in a rush of hot blood. But she wakes, given some kind of second chance, some kind of redemption, in a world that is dying but not dead yet.
But Ava brought something with her, and Eva has skeletons in her closet that are beginning to wake, and they are both being forced to remember each other's lives.Series

Summary
This all started two days ago, a quiet day of budgeting, of Ava sewing closed holes and rips in the clothes of other crew members while Eva sat on her laptop and stared at spreadsheets of embezzled money and wondered how the fuck she's supposed to pull this off. She occasionally flickers over to the tracker estimate of the world's food supply to remind herself of what's at stake.
Ava seemed to notice the tension despite Eva's attempts to hide it because she'd crawled over and slid herself into Eva's arms the way she does when she wants something badly. Eva had done little more than grumble in annoyance and continued scrolling through her spreadsheets of doom.
“Captain Stratt,” Ava drawled in that way she does when she's trying to crawl under Eva's skin and live there. It's ruinous because it works, because it was that and her leaning in to kiss the tiny V tattoo crossed with a line that marks her for life with no parole. “I wanna fuck you.”
In which Eva Stratt learns a lot both about herself and her new second in command.
