July brought its punishing heat to the east of the Cascades in Washington state.
The humid, afternoon air was hot and heavy against Eva’s skin where a film of sweat was starting to glister. Every summer, it seemed to her, grew more unbearable than the last. Taking a sip of her iced tea, she glanced at the dirt road through the window from where she sat at the kitchen table.
