    Summary

Softly, you admitted, "It reminds me of us, a little. Sometimes I wonder if our meeting was fate. If it was written in red, somewhere in the stars."

    "Red," I repeated. "Like astrophage."

If our meeting was truly written in the red of astrophage, then it would mean that the stars started dying for us—that the entire galaxy mourned for them by singing a dirge, and it was loud enough to be heard in the vast silence of the Big Nothing.

Perhaps the universe was torn in two a long time ago and is trying to pull the broken halves back together. For everything comes from stardust, from planets and moons to humans and Eridians. For across trillions of miles' worth of space and billions of years' worth of time, we existed at just the right parameters to have met each other. Then, perhaps the universe made me to love you, and perhaps the universe made you to be loved.

Perhaps that is what you call fate.

Or: Grace confesses his love. Rocky struggles to do the same, though not for the reasons you might think.

    Summary

“Hey, you’re the one who loves hearing my heartbeat.” Wait, nope, shouldn’t’ve said that. That definitely seems like too much, somehow. I feel my cheeks heating up.

Rocky’s claws fidget against the xenonite. “Yes. I do. Is good sound,” he insists, more quietly than I’d expected. “Means you still alive."

“Yeah.” I’m so alive right now that I can feel the pulse jumping in my throat. “That’s, um. That’s good.”

In the back of my mind, a very cool and rational part of myself is telling me: hey, since you’re on the subject of internal organs, why not take this opportunity to ask Rocky to feel you up so he can check on your appendix/gallbladder situation? Unfortunately, the rest of my mind just heard ask Rocky to feel you up and had the psychic equivalent of a seizure.

    Summary

Healy found being queer a lot more interesting than March did, like it was a hobby or something. She dragged Holland to a new gay bookstore down in Silver Lake on opening weekend and made her wait around for what felt like hours. Holland stood outside smoking with someone else’s bored girlfriend while Jack paged through books and talked earnestly to women in painter's pants.

Holland didn’t read much apart from magazines. She had a stack of Vogue and Playboy by her bed, and that was good enough for her. Sometimes when Jack was telling her some long story about something she read in one of her boring books, Holland got the feeling she was just as bad at being queer as she was at being normal.

    Summary

"You can literally hear inside me when you focus, bud. Has observing the action of my gallbladder in HD made you think less of me as a person, or humanity as a whole?"

[Yes,] Rocky says without hesitation, which makes Grace choke on a laugh. He amends, […at first. Then I get used to. Kind of cute now. Humans need infinity liquids to do basic process, always new mucus…]

"I bet I'm gonna find your ultra-high-temp organs super cute too," Grace offers with an irrepressible grin, "and actually, okay, this strikes me as a morale problem. You're getting too down on yourself. I promise you there is nothing I could find rearranging your—" Nope. "—digging around in there that would shame the entire Eridian race."

[No way for you to know this,] Rocky says flatly.

"There definitely is, because I'm gonna shame the entire human race first."

This is how they spend the next three days on the glove box addition while Mary reads to them from the unreleased 2021 NEISS report, filtered by incidents requiring extraction of foreign objects from the 'lower trunk' or 'pubic region'.

(or, Rocky eats something inedible. Grace helps. They both get Really Weird About It.)
