    Summary

"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.

Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.

Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.

Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.

His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.

    "NO!" Pomni screams.

(or: pomni pulls jax back from the brink.)

    Summary

"You're not dead," Pomni said with a frown. "Not yet, at least. You're just — indisposed."

At that, Jax gave her a long look as his mouth narrowed out into a little line. Then he sighed quietly. It wasn't the way he used to sigh, with dramatic posturing that begged the attention from anyone even remotely listening. It was small. Tired. Reflexive. Then he sat down with his knees to his chest, glaring into the dark water. The only light here, a single streetlamp, glowed weakly.

"Denial is an ugly color on you. Clashes with your stupid hat."

    "Jax — "

"I'm gone," he snapped. His voice echoed in the abyss. "Don't you get it? No one comes back from Abstraction. You're not saving me, you're not helping me grow. All you're doing is keeping my body from rotting." Jax's hands worked their way up to his head, squeezing as he growled, "You're talking to a ghost."

or, a post-canon fix-it fic, featuring the De-Abstraction of Jax. It's messy and it takes time, but it's never too late to try.

"What’s scarier than saving the world? Figuring out what to do afterwards. I get it,” Eddie turns on his side, one shoulder on the wall, and grips the front of Steve’s shirt. His face is so close Steve can feel the warmth of his breath. “But we’ve got time now. Right, Steve? We bought us all time. Time to figure all our shit out. Isn’t that what matters?”

    OR

Steve Harrington struggles to find purpose after the Upside Down.

(But maybe purpose doesn't have to be big. Maybe it's helping Dustin navigate Sophomore year. Maybe it's reminding Robin to send in college admission letters. Maybe it's Eddie Munson. Maybe).

“Alright, listen. You want to romance Max? It’s easier said than done.” When Lucas’s face falls, Steve is quick to tack on, “But it is doable. There are steps. Six of them.” He spreads his hands theatrically, bending a little at the waist as if setting the scene.

or: Lucas needs love advice, Dustin & Robin despair, and Steve's a regular Casanova.

    Summary

"She’s taking a sip, dry and sharp on her tongue, when the doorbell rings a floor above, and she hears distantly Steve’s open delight, Robin, Dustin, back from the shit I won’t understand?

I’m a lesbian, Nancy thinks, taking another sip of wine. Eddie clinks his glass against hers and sneaks a slice of chorizo from Steve’s chopping board, tapping a finger against the side of his nose, shh, don’t tell, the way normal couples keep their secrets, the way honesty is earned and not borne on the back of a lie.

Love is a battle I can win. Nancy turns to face the door."

// Christmas 1994. Nancy faces her fears.
