Summary
“Simon?” Grace tries out the name, the syllables rolling of his tongue. To his surprise, Simon looks up. He looks scared and confused, regardless of how harsh his bark may come off or unnatural his eyes are. Grace longs to help him.
“Can you c’mere, please? So I can show you proof I’m not lying to you?” Grace asks with a new wave of patience. Simon looks away and doesn’t move, choosing to glare at the wall.
“I don’t bite,” Grace reassures.
“What if I do?” Simon warns, tone too soft to be threatening.
Grace sits down with a grunt, crisscrossed on the floor from where he stood with the laptop settled on his lap.
“Then that’s a risk I’ll just have to take.”

Ryland Grace has been living happily on Erid the past year, or so he believes. He loves his comforts and small wins of his everyday, but when he’s alone it feels as though something’s missing.
Maybe this hard around the edges and mysterious stranger, the only human he’s made contact with in years, will become a friend.
Maybe something more, as his foolish soft heart always holds onto hope.

“I’m just teasing,” Simon says, voice gentler. Almost apologetic. Definitely still more amused than Ryland cares for. “I’m more surprised than anything.”
The sentence hangs alongside the rush of the shower, bouncing around the side of the tub. Bouncing around inside Ryland’s far too curious brain. Ryland sighs. “Why?”
Simon doesn’t point out the way his voice cracks, a small mercy. “Wasn’t sure you even bothered with lowly things like…in-flight self service.”

Summary

But just at the moment that it seems even friendship might be too much to ask for, the two of them are gifted with a temporary responsibility that neither ever expected. A responsibility far more personal than ship and crew, and one that forces them together just as it seems like they are falling apart. Still, the clock is ticking, and as time goes by, the thought of letting go becomes an impending reality that feels impossible to bear.
