Summary
A tenth of what keeps California running hails from the hearth of this modern relic. It’s legitimately riveting. The scale of it is nearly unfathomable.
How is it possible that Tommy's the same age as this monolith of the nuclear age? It jars him, it humbles him. Both of them have spent forty years going and going, not stopping for breath.

Tommy and Evan find each other again. All it takes is a power plant, a corrupt fire chief, and a couple of exes.

Summary
And Eddie’s not jealous, of course not, that’s Buck’s thing. He thinks wryly of Tommy and sprained ankles, and an embarrassing fondness fills his chest. Buck’s so— Buck, wholly and completely, and Eddie misses him, is all. But that’s not why he’s doing it, honest. These people don’t appreciate Buck for who he is, not the way Eddie does. He just wants the best for Buck, okay?
***
Eddie brings Christopher home from Texas to find that in his absence, Buck’s started sleeping around.
Eddie is completely normal about that.
(Or, Eddie starts cockblocking Buck. Things escalate from there.)

They work in tandem then, Buck-and-Eddie answering the call to give Software Engineer Caroline the best orgasm of her life. It doesn’t take long—of course not, of course they’d be good at this together, working as well here as they do on the field.
In his own bed, Eddie comes when she does, shuddering at the hot, dark look in Buck’s eyes as he looms over him, flat on his back, caged in by Buck’s biceps as Eddie works his hand over his cock, back arching under Buck’s approving gaze.
He blinks lazily a moment later, cum pooling across his abs, and stretches out in the bed, flexing his feet. He’s for sure ready for that nap now. He pulls his t-shirt over his head, wiping up the mess before tossing it towards the laundry basket in the corner of his room. He shoots, he scores, Eddie thinks, and wiggles a bit to get comfortable.
He’s falling asleep when it occurs to him just how little he thought about Caroline. Huh. He’s not that surprised, though; Eddie’s never really been into blondes.
When he wakes up an hour or so later and starts on his chores, he comes to the unfortunate realization that his old LAFD t-shirt was actually Buck’s old LAFD t-shirt—oops. It gets tossed into the laundry with everything else, and Eddie doesn’t give it a second thought.

Summary
"Listen, I can read between the lines. You're the birthday girl, he's the fiancé, I'm the present, right? Full disclosure, I have like six and a half roommates, so I hope you don't want to come to my place."
"Jesus, I knew the economy was bad, but six? And a half?" Tommy asks.
"That's four official roommates, two roommates' girlfriends who don't pay rent, and one fuckbuddy who supposedly isn't anything serious but still sleeps over four nights a week." Buck counts them off on his fingers. It's not that he doesn't ever bring girls back to his place, but he knows instinctively that a woman like Abby deserves better than a mattress on the floor and music blasting from the other side of the wall.
"Can't argue with that math," Abby says, finishing her wine.
"Well, we don't have any roommates," Tommy says, "but we do have a California king."
.
Buck gets picked up in a bar and has a threesome so good it breaks an engagement. The engagement isn't even his, which might make it worse. -

Bookmarker's Notes
It had been three days ago and Evan had spent nineteen of those thirty-two minutes with his hands full of gel, explaining the fact that fish, conceptually, aren't really a specific animal so much as a group of animals classified along a historical genetic line. Paraphylytic, he'd called it, like monkeys, or reptiles. He'd spent one minute blushing after Tommy wondered out loud why he never got a PhD in biology, and seven minutes letting Tommy ruck his shirt up his chest and drag his mouth down it, teeth bared and tongue hot, tugging open his nice slim-fitting dark jeans and sucking him dry. Then he'd spent five minutes hurriedly scrunching the now-stiff gel into his hair and washing his face while Tommy innocently brushed his teeth next to him.
Tommy should've asked the question then, he realizes, with startling clarity.

Summary
If the only reason he isn’t rotting in the ruins of a department store in Encino is because of the sense of duty of a rookie he’s tormented from the moment they met, then Tommy shouldn’t be here right now.
Statistically, karmically, cosmically, like he’s always known in the back of his mind, Tommy was never supposed to make it out of that mall. An insignificant man dying in an insignificant place—his fate finally unfurled. Any other American man burned and buried in the belly of any other American strip mall, the two of them indiscernible archetypes of their kind.

Tommy’s life has been a horror movie, but loving Evan is like a romantic comedy.

Bookmarker's Notes
Loving Evan is like a romantic comedy. The time they spend together leaves Tommy the lightest he’s ever felt in his life, and as a man that flies for a living, that’s saying something. Evan’s adorable and adoring and doting and he’s unintentionally got the greatest comedic timing of anyone Tommy’s ever met. He talks with his hands, and Tommy loves to listen. He knows everything about nothing, he’s an ambitious home cook, he’s a loving uncle. He’s got a dirty mouth and a dirtier mind, a body like you wouldn’t believe, and the drama, when there is drama, is shallow, the darkness never much deeper than the surface. Loving him is a comfort, like his favorite formulaic film genre, or like a flight pattern he’s followed hundreds of times.

“Thanks,” Evan says, into that sacred space that only exists when you’re exhausted and on the way to sleep with someone. Where Tommy always wanted to tell other kids unguarded, vulnerable stuff at childhood sleepovers, and then found himself doing it again with partners as an adult. Evan hooks a leg through one of Tommy’s; his leg hair scratches softly. “For being here.”
All night and all day long, Tommy wanted to be there for Evan, and when he finally made it, Evan just— Well, first he smirked at Tommy and kissed him like he wanted to fuck him in the Presbyterian Memorial lobby, but then he led Tommy into a room full of every single person who mattered in his life and he made him feel like he belonged there. He introduced Tommy around, he got him a water and a plate of wedding cake, he let him sleep in the corner, he took him home.
'Leave him better than you found him' has been an easy mantra to keep in the back of Tommy’s mind. It’s what he would’ve wanted someone to have done for him, once upon a time. But over and over again, Evan has reached out for him, and it’s like he’s silently asking: why leave at all?
Thanks for being here, Evan said, heavy with meaning. That searing earnesty, again and again.
Tommy touches Evan’s chin and kisses his mouth. “I want to be,” he tells him honestly, and he watches the words — rawer than Tommy meant for them to come out — roll over Evan’s face. Tommy kisses him about it; holds the back of his neck and lets his thumb stroke along his hairline, feeling Evan splay his hand open between Tommy’s bare shoulderblades.

Sam didn’t need to look very carefully to know whether he was doing his job well, though. Though Dean’s dick would forever be relegated to “the source of many of our problems” status, there was a kind of clinical satisfaction to be had in making it jump around in a way Sam’s most definitely had not, when he’d been on the other end of this. Sam might not have the delicacy and dexterity Dean had shown, or the experience, or even quite as intuitive a grasp of when Dean’s muscles were starting to seize, but he clearly had the better strategic mind, and Dean was making ridiculous noises up into the pillow and sweating bullets. Dean had done better at keeping it from hurting, which Sam was going to be silently grateful for until he died, but Dean was probably having a much better time.

Later, curious, he cinches on his bath robe and goes to investigate. There’s a plastic bag with a bottle of Tylenol, and another of Advil, and a stack of DVDs. There’s a Post-It stuck to the one on top. It says, Since you have the time now. And then, like it was scribbled on hastily: Hope you feel better soon, Cas.
Cas touches each item in the bag, gently, in turn, like they’re small, sleeping, precious things that can wake at any moment.

Bookmarker's Notes
I BE GOOD, is another one that’s practiced for a really long time. And then, YOU OK? The question mark is weird, shaky and slanted. DON’T BE MAD PLEASE, in its full glory, on the next page. How nice to know that Dean learned how to write it properly, how convenient, Castiel thinks, something bitter crawling up his throat, his eyes burning. And then, small, BE WITH ME? There’s a lot of it, and it’s most recent, Castiel thinks. His heart hurts when he thinks of Dean, leaning over the kitchen counter as the music plays from the radio and writing DON’T BE MAD PLEASE a thousand times. Copying the bright letters from the containers and boxes of food. Struggling to write SORRY on a piece of paper when Castiel was lying in the upstairs bathroom, choking on pain, and Dean’s hand burned and throbbed and there was no one to comfort him.

Summary
He'll say he's leaving, and no one will wish him luck. He knows what to expect. He's ready for it — yelling and accusations, guilt trips and ultimatums.
Dean will just give him a guarded look, and it's going to hurt like fists never could. Something here will shift, change, pop back into place. They'll be normal. Because Sam will finally be normal. That, more than anything, is what scares him.

Bookmarker's Notes
He can almost see it, if he tries, the anguish and frustration that's slipping from him to Dean. It's like every time they kiss he leaves a little more of his uncertainty behind. He couldn't explain it to him even if he wanted to, because Dean thinks the fact they're family should be enough to hold them together. Dean loves him like he loves their father, and he thinks that love will be enough to save them all. That if he'd been older and able to love their mom more, maybe he could have saved her, too.
Sam watches the light reflect off of Dean's silver ring, and it's only in that moment that he notices the mirror it is of their father's wedding band.
It's a terrifying thing, to be loved that much.

“Have you been doing laundry? Where are all my boxers?”
Dean kept walking right into this stuff. Sam weighed his options and spoke carefully.
“Half your boxers are in the second drawer of my dresser. You didn’t like going to get clean underwear, in the morning, so you made me clear out a drawer for you.” He paused. “I’ve got a drawer in your room, too.”
Dean looked physically pained. “That… can’t be true.”
Sam sighed and went back to his book. “I know you don’t remember, but we had a lot of sex. You’re gonna have to trust me.”

“—and I know all this,” Sam went on, dropping his voice to an incensed hiss, “because you told me years ago, when you were wasted, and then you said I was ‘beautiful like a nice house’ and puked on my shoes, and when I told you about it the next morning you tried to tell me I heard you wrong.”
