Summary
A wild laugh escapes from Seungcheol’s throat. He’s clearly desperate. It’s a little bit funny, honestly. “They’re all so annoying, but I needed them to stop bothering me, so I just told them I have a boyfriend. And that he’s coming with me. So they can all shut up.”
Jeonghan pulls one hand free to grab a packet of creamer. “And you couldn’t think of anyone else to pathetically beg?”
“No, they asked me his name and—”
“You said me?”
“No, I said Yoon Jeonghan,” Seungcheol corrects.
(OR: Seungcheol needs Jeonghan to pretend to be his boyfriend, and Jeonghan needs to stop pretending he’s allergic to love.)

Seungcheol blinked a few times in confusion. “What,” he squeaked.
Both his friends' eyes on him suddenly made his skin itchy and he heard blood rushing to his ears in a mad race.
“Jeonghan,” Soonyoung said suspiciously, like he knew something was up but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. “Your boyfriend.”
“He's not–” his voice came out higher than he intended. He clasped his mouth shut as Wonwoo's eyebrows shot to his hairline and Soonyoung smiled like it was suddenly Christmas morning. He cleared his throat. “He's not my boyfriend.”

“What do you want from Mingyu?” Jeonghan asks, almost as soon as he’s close enough for his hushed urgency to be audible.
“Nothing, Jeonghan-ssi. That’s the answer. Mingyu and I are friends. That’s all I want—to be his friend.”
Jeonghan could say any number of things to that. Seungcheol can tell from looking at his face that he maybe even wants to say them, to accuse Seungcheol of attempting to put Mingyu in harm’s way or ruin his reputation. Or, perhaps worse, of “corrupting” Mingyu to his political agenda, of trying to subvert the “noble and unimpeachable” monarchy to his own ends.
In the end, though, Jeonghan doesn’t do any of those things. His shoulders relax from rigid power into a comfortable slouch, and his steely expression softens.
“Mingyu…Mingyu could use a friend like you. So I’ll allow it, as long as you tell me what you do and where you go. Mingyu won’t tell me anything, and it’s a nightmare trying to keep that kid safe even within the palace’s walls.”
(Looking back, this is the first time Jeonghan surprises Seungcheol. It won’t be the last.)
