Summary
“I am sorry, Ed,” he says when the catch in his throat unlatches. “And I’m sorry for what I said about Jack. I just—I don’t think I can enjoy hurting you.”
“It’s fine,” says Ed, his voice a low rumble where Stede’s face is pressed into the crook of his neck. “‘S not for everyone. I don’t need it. Honest. Let’s just forget about it, yeah?”
Stede can’t forget about it, of course.

Ed wants to be hurt. Stede's not so sure, until he figures out there's more than one way to go about it.

Summary
Ed is not Blackbeard, Ed can shake a man’s hand and smile and compliment him on not being dead; Ed can carefully press a scarf of rather exquisite cashmere to his skin, the sensation of it soft as sleep, soft as no touch he’s ever felt. Ed can keep a secret, can step inside an auxiliary wardrobe and run his fingers over the rails of fine clothing, not even able to imagine what a person could need all this for, all these fine and delicate things. Nothing that a person like Blackbeard could ever need, could ever want.

Summary
After spending years as Elias’s personal assistant, Martin is transferred to the Archives. Until now, he’s only heard rumors of the questionably human Archivist and the disappearances of his assistants. He doesn’t expect the Archivist’s work with Institute donors to be quite so personal.
He certainly doesn’t expect to become attached to the Archivist himself.

Summary
“He changed my life,” Martin tells the latest scholar, his hand resting over Jon’s, the tingling buzz of his divinity dancing over Jon’s skin. “And for a life as long as mine has been, that’s saying a lot.”
“Isn’t it difficult, though?” the scholar asks, pen poised over her notebook. “To love a human—a mortal, knowing someday he will die.”
Martin shakes his head. “I don’t think about that,” he says.

Summary
“I’m going gray,” Martin says. It’s unmistakable now he looks at it, silvery strands scattered among the red-blond of his hair. Not as stark a contrast as the gray in Jon’s black hair, which is probably why he didn’t notice it until now, but definitely apparent. Jon pops into the frame of his reflection, peering at the crown of Martin’s head.
“Oh, yeah,” he says, as if it’s a mildly interesting fact. He kisses Martin on the cheek. “Welcome to the club, love.”

Martin realizes he's getting older.

Summary
He’s frowning at the copy of “Slaughterhouse-Five” that has somehow been classified under Historical Fiction when he hears the bell above the door jingle. Jon makes his way through the narrow shelves and stacks of books to the front desk, where a man is standing. He looks rather harried and a bit out of breath, glancing around him. When he spots Jon he gives a worried smile.
“Hi there,” he says. “You, uh, you haven’t seen a dog, have you?”

Summary
“How’s your book?” he asks. Martin looks up at him, beaming with enthusiasm.
“It’s amazing!” he says. “There are some poets, y’know? Who just sort of…speak to your heart and soul. As if they know you. It’s like that.”
“Oh, that’s—that’s great,” says Jon, and in that moment he decides: he’s going to write a poem for Martin’s birthday.

Summary
Martin doesn’t notice it at first, in the rush of pain and panic. There’s so much blood, he’s not sure if Jon’s breathing; people are crowding around to try and help, and it’s only when they’re in the ambulance, the paramedics giving Jon oxygen and trying to stop the bleeding, that Martin sees it: a slender, translucent red cord that stretches between him and Jon.

Summary
“There’s a new guy in our department—Jon? He’s been going on about how he needs to find someone to share with.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, he’s in some month to month arrangement at the moment, says it’s awful. I can give him your number?”
“What’s he like?” Martin asks, because he doesn’t want to get saddled with some arsehole.
“Bit of an arsehole,” she shrugs. “But I think it’s mostly for show. He’s nice enough really.”

Summary
For the most part, Jon’s got used to the persistent aches and pains and fatigue that come with having your muscles and nerves eaten clean through by burrowing worms. It’s better than it was; he’s dealing with it. But every time he thinks he’s getting back to something like normal, there’s a day like today, where a bundle of spasming neurons has to remind him that “normal” probably isn’t on the cards.

Summary
Their fifth morning in the cottage, Martin wakes up and Jon isn’t there. The blankets beside him are still rumpled into a vaguely Jon-shaped arrangement, but the space is cool, as if he’s been gone for some time. He isn’t in the bathroom, or the living room, or the kitchen, or right on the front step when Martin hopefully walks outside. He is, it appears, nowhere in the vicinity of the cottage.
Martin shoves away the pang of cold anxiety that echoes in his chest.

Summary
For weeks leading up to it, Martin debates whether to say anything. Jon hasn't mentioned anything about it, and he would have if he remembered, no question, so maybe it's better not to remind him. It's not exactly a nice anniversary, even if it gave them a whole new start.

Summary
“Well observed,” says Jon dryly. “We’re in Cumbria. Or at least, I was in Cumbria. I’m not entirely sure whether we’re still—ah, never mind.” No point alarming the man any further with wild speculation about time dilation and planes of existence; he’s already sounding close to panicked.
“Cumbria?” Martin demands. “I can’t be in Cumbria, I have work in the morning!”

Summary
Sandra knocks on his door around midday to remind him that the staff holiday party is at five o’clock, and also that he forgot to RSVP if he was bringing a plus one?
“Hardly,” Elias snorts distractedly, squinting at the last paragraph he wrote; can they really decrease enrollment handling time by eight percent or is he being too bold? “Peter wouldn’t be seen dead at—”
He stops, brow furrowing. A wave of something close to vertigo washes over him, and he grasps the edge of his desk to ground himself.
“I…ah, no. No plus one.”

Summary
His face is burning with humiliation; his knees feel weak and he grips the pole more tightly for support. “Stop…” he attempts again, “Please, you can’t—”
“Shhhh,” Peter murmurs, nuzzling into Martin’s neck, beard scratching against his skin and sending goosebumps shivering down his arms. “You don’t want to cause a scene, do you?”

Summary
“Oh god,” Martin groans. “We really don’t have to talk about my masturbation habits, do we?”
“Of course not, if you don’t want to.” Jon takes a bite of his toast and chews thoughtfully for a minute, then continues: “But we should probably talk about the, ah, the general topic of sex, at some point. Don’t you think?”
“Oh, no, it’s fine,” Martin tells him, glad he can put Jon’s mind at ease. “I’m completely fine with not having sex, honestly. I would never want you to do anything you don’t want to.”
“Right,” says Jon carefully. “And, uh, what if I did want to?”

“Hysteria? You can’t be serious, Elias. What are you, a Victorian academic?”
“Not quite,” says Elias with a smile. “I am, however, your employer. And in my judgment, you need to address these issues immediately in order to remain fit for your role as Head Archivist. You wouldn’t want to put your position at risk, would you, Jon?”

Summary
Roger’s eyes stay on Jon as he finds a seat, leaning wearily against the wall of the carriage. Jon shifts for a moment, trying to get comfortable, then sits up and peels his jacket off. His back arches awkwardly as he stretches to pull the sleeve off his right arm, and Elias sees Roger’s gaze drop to the front of Jon’s shirt, where his chest is pressed out against the fabric.

Summary
Martin turns it over and looks at the front cover again. The woman is still smiling brightly, one hand on her cocked hip and the other raised invitingly. Something blooms in his chest at the sight of her immaculate outfit, her contented expression. Envy? Longing? It’s silly, but she looks so perfectly gratified in her role: she is a Good Housekeeper, and she knows it. Martin’s never been even half that sure of himself.
He shakes his head at the flight of fancy. It’s just a book. Mrs. Meek—if that’s who the woman on the cover is supposed to be—isn’t even real.
