Summary
Wei Ying uses his smile and bright laughs like a folding screen, like one of Nie Huaisang's many fans, but Lan Wangji sees. He sees the network of lightning and raised skin on the boy's back, sees his smile falter with every barbed reprimand from Jiang Wanyin and the way he constantly skirts around the border of things, as if he has to constantly know the point where he is unwanted.
He looks at Wei Ying and sees a future of squandered potentials and a brightness curbed at every turn, of a life making himself less in a Sect that would always see him as a servant's son and the reflection of their own inadequacy, and he laments that Wei Ying could not seem to see that - See past the sense of debt and false belonging his so-called family had ingrained into him.
But Lan Wangji is a patient man, and he would make Wei Ying see in time. Even if it means using the insecurities of Wei Ying's own family against him.

Summary
The truth of the matter was that when it came to taking care of people and their problems, both he and Wei Ying were of one mind. However, whereas Lan Wangji was taught to care for himself as much as other people, Wei Ying, from early age, was taught that him having needs was burdensome. He disregarded his own pain with frightening ease and offered up evey part of himself for others to use with no reservation.
Thus, Lan Wangji made sure that his husband's needs were never overlooked, his hurts never unadressed.
So it was that when they purified an ancient temple and its goddess benevolently offered them each a wish in return, Wei Ying asked for his family: for Jiang Cheng to never have lost his parents and his core, for Jiang Yanli to never have lost her husband and her own life because of him; Lan Zhan asked for Wei Ying.

It’s been a week and a half by Lan Wangji’s careful count, and Jiang Wanyin has not returned. Nor has anyone else, for that matter, but given how close Wei Ying and the Jiang sect heir seemed, Lan Wangji cannot help but worry. Could something have happened to the other disciples? The Wen likely said that they all died during a hunt; would they have posted watch on the cave to ensure no one survived? Or was their hubris so great that they would merely assume their lies to be the truth?

Wei Wuxian gasped as he was caught mid-fall, firm arms locking around his waist, pulling him against an unyielding chest.
It was embarassing really, just how quickly Wei Wuxian fell for Lan Wangji, the first time they met. Maybe that was why he kept making a fool of himself every time they ran into one another.
Or in which, Wei Wuxian falls completely, utterly, head over heels in love with Lan Zhan the first time they meet.

They hadn’t parted on good terms, and he couldn’t be sure if the man wanted to kill him.He wouldn’t be surprised; the rumours he’d heard about himself when he left Burial Mounds to go to Yiling were far from flattering. It seemed as if every single thing that had gone wrong since his departure had been blamed on him, regardless of if he was even involved or not. Half the stories about him were ridiculous, but people believed them, and he knew that was dangerous.
Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan said with a tilt of his head.
“Do you want to come in?” he asked hesitantly. If the man truly wanted to hurt him, he hoped that he’d do it outside, so the Wens would not be in danger.
“Mm,” Lan Zhan agreed, “I have not come to harm Wei Ying.”
Lan Zhan decides something needs to be done when he visits Wei Ying at the Burial Mounds. And that changes everything

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, and when Wei Ying turns around, Lan Zhan has followed him into the kitchen and is doing something with the empty wine glass that could almost be termed fidgeting. His fingertips tense and relax, and Lan Zhan takes a deep breath and squares his shoulders almost imperceptibly. “Would you like me to cut your hair for you?”
Wei Ying’s brain skids to a halt. Oh. Huh. That would. That would be a hell of a lot easier, wouldn’t it? Lan Zhan would at least be able to see and touch the back of his head at the same time, and that’s half the battle. Even if it’s not a good haircut, it would be something, and it probably wouldn’t end with Wei Ying in tears, and it would end with Wei Ying having shorter hair, which is the only thing he really wants right now.
“Yeah,” he says, a little awed. “If you don’t mind then that would be great, Lan Zhan.” He can almost feel the breeze on his undercut again, spine tingling in anticipation.

For months, Wei Wuxian had been haunted by the most enticing fantasies of Lan Wangji kissing him on Phoenix Mountain turning into something quite a bit more explicit--which was nothing new for him, really. He'd been babbling about fantasies of Lan Wangji overpowering and ravishing his younger self ever since their very first time together, and it wasn't as if those fantasies had gone away over time. If anything, they'd just grown more diverse, more... creative.

Lan Wangji looks down at his own hands, steadying himself. It is easier to think clearly when he is not looking into Wei Wuxian’s eyes. He takes the scroll from his pouch.
“Research has uncovered a method,” he says. He does not mention the forbidden nature of said research, nor does he elaborate on the method itself. He will not venture to speak it aloud. He hands the scroll over.
Wei Wuxian looks at him for a long moment as he takes it, and Lan Wangji holds his breath, waiting for him to decide. Waiting to see if he is at least interested enough in the possibility of a new core to read it.
He is. He does. Lan Wangji might be relieved, if not for what comes next.
Lan Wangji offers to help Wei Wuxian develop a new golden core via dual cultivation. He struggles to keep his feelings in check.

Wei Wuxian remembers, a long time ago in basically another life, a college party where he managed to bully Lan Wangji into taking a single shot. The Second Jade had gone bleary and fallen asleep on a couch almost immediately. Wei Wuxian figured that in the intervening years his tolerance would have improved, or that a drunk Lan Zhan would immediately be followed by a sleeping Lan Zhan.
This supposition was, as it turns out, incorrect. Grown-ass adult Lan Zhan is, when drunk, something Wei Wuxian can only describe as white girl wasted.
Or: Lan Zhan gets drunk on Capitol Hill. Wei Wuxian isn't supposed to be the responsible one, but by god, he's gonna do it.

Summary
The main screen flashes to life across the Bridge, and Lan Wangji has to grip the back of a chair to stop himself from falling over.
Because there, blown up to ten times life size and staticy with the void surrounding them, is Wei Ying.
Wei Ying, who flashed into Lan Wangji’s life like a supernova, all those years ago in Nav School, burning bright and hot and unreachable. Wei Ying, who lit Lan Wangji’s world on fire, dragged him in unwillingly by his everything, right into that inescapable light. Wei Ying, who did what all supernovas do, and burnt out in a spectacular display of power, until there was nothing left but darkness.
Wei Ying, who has been dead for thirteen years.

Anyway, the point is, Wei Wuxian knows rain. It’s a natural, normal weather phenomenon. Normally he only pays it as much mind as he needs to--like, maybe he remembers to grab a hat if it looks stormy. (It’s more likely that he’ll forget the hat and then have to crowd under Lan Zhan’s umbrella, which neither of them is complaining about, mind you.) It’s just. You know. Rain. Sure, he and Lan Zhan may have had several dramatic, fraught, emotional confrontations with each other in the middle of horrible rainstorms, but that’s just coincidence! Sometimes it rains! Nothing to worry about!
It’s just that maybe they’re primed to expect a certain outcome from past experience, which might explain why, when lightning flashes and thunder cracks and the sky opens up over them a little ways outside the nearest village, he and Lan Zhan whip around to face each other in a sudden panic.
