“Armand?” Lestat looks at him very seriously, then. “He has neglected you?”

Daniel laughs, though there isn’t much humor in it. “That’s one fuckin’ word for it, sure.”

“Oh, mon ami.” Lestat’s eyes are round and wet like an animal’s. “A prize such as yourself does not deserve this terrible treatment.”

He shrugs. “You get used to it.”

No.” Lestat grabs one of Daniel’s hands in both of his own, making such intense eye contact with the journalist that it starts to grow uncomfortable. “You deserve better. You must understand this.”

“Okay,” Daniel agrees, shifting a little in his seat. Anything to move past this point in the interaction. “I deserve better.”

“Good,” Lestat says, nodding resolutely to himself. “This is why you should let me fuck you.”

There’s a beat of supremely awkward silence.

"I've offended you,” Armand says. “My apologies. I crossed a line.”

    Yeah, you fucking did.

“No, that’s – it’s fine. I’ll just need my accountant to crunch the numbers on that one, is all.”

Jesus H. Christ, Molloy, what are you doing, you absolute nutjob?

“Daniel,” a voice calls from the other side. “Daniel, open the door.”

God, he wants to laugh. He’s shaking like a leaf, with vomit still around his lips, and his little devil is right outside the door. Daniel’s life is a fucking comedy.

Daniel has a bad panic attack and Armand tries to fix the mess he made.

Armand picks up the bag and upends it over the bed; he picks out the antibiotics and deposits the eight boxes in Daniel’s lap.

    “What the fuck…”

“These are all different — which ones seem best suited to your predicament?”

“Predica— oh my god, man, you can’t be for real!”

Armand frowns. “Daniel, please. This is serious.”

    “I mean… it’s really not.”

“Blood poisoning is, in fact, extremely serious, beloved. Now please, tell me, which of these should you take?”

“Uh, these are all pretty strong, I don’t need any of these.”

    “Yes, you do.”

“It’s not healthy to take antibiotics for no reason!”

Looks like Armand will have to crush the pills into his food.

Or: Armand, the plagues and the wonders of medicine. And Daniel. So much Daniel.

    Summary

But the real curse was that he could live with it. Most people, even when they stop being people, are terrified of change —but terror is something different. In the words of Lincoln Michel, terror "is the feeling of dread and apprehension at the possibility of something frightening, while horror is the shock and repulsion of seeing the frightening thing." But shock can only go so far. Repeated exposure to horror anesthetizes.

Alternative title: "You better start believing in fucked up gothic romances, Mr. Molloy. You're in one."
