Together they make their way to Zoya's chambers, the closest private room. They walk in and as soon as Zoya closes the door behind her, Genya is on her, pulling the collar of her kefta to the side to expose an angry red mark on the side of her neck and sighs.
Zoya shakes her off and takes a step away from her friend, but says nothing. Genya simply stares pleadingly at her. “Zoya…”
“Don’t.”
“I must. It’s my job.” Zoya sighs and turns away from her friend. “You promised me this would stop.”
Zoya walks over to her drink cart and pours herself a glass of bourbon. “It did stop. For a while, it did.”

She pauses to stretch out her neck, hands dipping into the water bowl before one hand comes back to shape the outside, the other coming up to gently shape the rim with long, deft fingers.

He’s almost certain it started the moment he woke up to find her sitting by his bedside, a weak smile on her face that did nothing to hide the concern in her eyes, the tear stains on her cheeks.
