"I have decided to go into exile," Theseus announced one morning, apparently out of nowhere.
"Exile? Why would you do that?" Phaedra asked, sitting next to Theseus on the bench, kicking her foot against his every few seconds, looking at Theseus to see if something horribly bad had happened, as if she could tell merely from looking at him.
"I've done terrible things, love. You only know the good part of me. The husband part of me. The side of me that is a lover. I shield you from the other parts of me," he said, hand on his heart, his head lowered. "I am glad I do such things, shield you from some of the horrible things I have done. For your sake. And for mine.
"I do too. I shield you too," Phaedra said. Her mind was on the family curse. She thought she had done damn well shielding him from the curse Helios had so generously shared with his descendants.
