“'Did you get enough to eat at dinner?” Annabeth said with a groan, weakly smacking at his back. She had to at least try to pretend to be more irritated than turned on by all this biting, or he'd be even more insufferable than he was already promising to be. “Because I'm starting to feel like tonight's main course.”

The pulse of his surprised laugh sent another shiver through her, abruptly cut off when he - finally - yanked her down off of his shoulder into a much more conventional bridal-style position in his arms.

“That's cause you are, babe,” he murmured, tongue flicking out from between smirking lips."'

“Stop smiling at the broccoli,” she said. “It’s creepy.”

“I’m not smiling at the broccoli,” he protested. “I’m smiling at my beautiful girlfriend who bullies me in public spaces.”

She huffed out a laugh and pulled Sally’s list from her coat pocket. “Okay, we need: milk, eggs, pasta, tomatoes, ground turkey, and… oh.” She raised an eyebrow. “Special request: ‘if they have those blue cookies again, please grab them for Percy :)’ She used a smiley.”

    Summary

In New Rome, love looks easy: lazy kisses on the grass and gentle touches without urgency. But for Annabeth Chase, loving someone has always meant keeping them alive, and that requires shouting, orders, and contingency plans.

Annabeth starts to believe that her trauma has made her too broken to be the girlfriend Percy deserves. It will take a reality check from Clarisse and a blue muffin to realize that maybe Percy doesn't need softness; maybe he is the only one who knows how to translate her language of war.

Or: Annabeth learns that protecting someone is a valid love language.

She plants her foot and grips one of the branches and pulls herself up, and from there, it is just a matter of moving higher, making the right steps and grabbing the correct holds.

She knows Anthony is behind her, unwilling to look as though he is less capable than her, by the quietly muttered curses and whispered instructions. She knows he is not talking to her purely because he is whispering.

Finally, she finds a place to stop, resting her back against the main trunk of the tree and letting her legs rest across two branches. She reaches up, and pulls an apple from the leaves, biting into it.

It is still a little early in the season, but the apple is delicious nonetheless.

“You managed to keep up with me,” Kate muses, watching Anthony sit precariously in a nest of branches growing close together.

“You say that as if it was difficult,” Anthony teases, raising an eyebrow.
