There were other goddesses that his mind conjured when it came to Penelope, particularly with the warmth of wine flooding his body (it was simply the wine). Fair Artemis with her piercing stare, glowing and radiant Aphrodite…
He did not allow himself to linger on the comparisons — such things were dangerous — but he thought it difficult to be blamed for having them. Who could think otherwise, with the way her bright eyes shimmered like precious gems, lit from happiness and drink? How could he not notice how her curls glinted against the torchlight, woven with pearls that shone within her hair like stars in the night? How could he look away, when her gaze met his and her full lips curved upward, as if she had been hoping to find his eyes upon her?
How could he respond with anything less than a smile of his own? -

Summary
Odysseus, Prince and Knight of Ithaca, knows he will not be chosen as Princess Helen's husband and protector, no matter how well he performs in the tournament for her hand. He came to gather information and forge allies, but most of all to prove what he — and Ithaca — were capable of. It was the path laid out before him by the Goddess Athena, and would lead to greatness.
But, a chance encounter in Sparta's marketplace changes everything, and challenges the entire course of his life and purpose...
“Though it is in Princess Helen’s name, I know other ladies may offer their favor,” he went on, and while his words didn’t waver his heart seemed caught in his throat, even as it drummed powerfully against his ribs. The noisy chatter of other conversations threatened to drown him out, and he leaned toward her again, unable to look away from her gaze. “Will you be offering yours?”
The flush returned to her cheeks, and her smile bloomed wide. “That depends,” she said, after a moment of thought, lovely eyes soft and sweet, “on who is looking to earn it.”

Summary
Morpheus, the God of Dreams, takes pity on the King and Queen of Ithaca. Odysseus’s return is many years away, yet his and Penelope’s minds find each other in sleep. It’s both a blessing and a curse, and sometimes all that keeps them going.
Queen Penelope stepped into the dream as easily as crossing a threshold, and with her came the sun, as if Helios's carriage rode atop her billowing black hair. The carnage vanished in her presence, the ground no longer a battlefield but a sloping grassy hill dotted with olive trees. Her bright blue eyes almost glowed, searching the hillside with clear intent.
The King of Ithaca stood, gazing at her as if she were a vision of Aphrodite herself. The blood streaking his face and staining his hands evaporated in the wake of her sunlight, the dead bundle in his arms vanishing with it.
Morpheus stared as well, unable to believe that she stood before them. It was no shaped dream becoming a nightmare, no conjuration of the King’s mind to protect himself. It was her, slipping into his dream as if it were a room in their home. Answering her husband’s desperate cries.

Summary
Nine years into the war, Penelope receives word of Palamedes' death, and knows it was through Odysseus's actions.
That knowledge strikes a fire within, built on her desperate longing, and she cannot help but imagine what she would do if her husband were returned to her, with this news fresh from his lips...
If only he were really there with her, finally. To hold their son and be the father he hardly got the chance to be. She always wished for him, wanted him, every moment of the day — even during the shameful times when the agony of waiting made her angry with him — and that want rose in her now like the tide.
Powerful, inevitable, and all-consuming.
It anchored to her desires, her wildest hope — if he were here now, oh the things she would do with him — and it spun glorious thoughts that could not be ignored.
What would she do with him, if he were here? Knowing this. Having learned what he did.
Meanwhile, in the war-camps outside Troy's walls, Odysseus wishes for Penelope in turn, and wonders about her own thoughts regarding his actions toward Palamedes...and how she would greet him when she knew.

Summary
“I thought you had not played this game.”
Penelope smiled, idly rubbing her thumb along the small stone in her hand as she finally glanced up and met his stare. “Is that what I said?”
He didn't immediately reply. His dark eyes held hers for a long moment in which she forgot to breathe entirely. Then, a smirk spread across his face.
“No,” he admitted, tilting his head as he continued to study her. “It is not.”
She placed her stone, fully surrounding his final piece on the board, then grasped it in her palm, and brought it over to her side with all of his others that she had taken.
“Well played, Princess Penelope.” Odysseus bowed slightly, though his gaze never left her.
She returned the gesture, using all of her willpower to keep her voice steady, despite the warmth that surged through her as he said her name. “You fought mightily, my lord, to the last.”
“Not enough to win,” he sighed, though his smirk had not lessened, and he appeared to be observing her far closer than he ever had before. “I admit defeat.”
Oh, Penelope thought as she straightened once more and her smile grew, I have not won yet. But I will.

Summary
"'Madness…" he repeated, the threatening sobs changing to laughter bubbling up unbidden from his throat. "Madness!"
Penelope's face scrunched in confusion for a brief moment, before it too dawned on her, eyes lighting up with a glint of hope. It was her turn to take to pacing, springing to her feet, fingers tapping against her thighs as she flitted to a fro.
"Madness… It could work! If the greatest mind of Achaea is ruined, unable to conjure up clever plans —"
"—then the sons of Atreus will have no use of me, that skill of mine lost to the wind!" He swept Penelope into his arms, spinning the two of them together. He breathed in her scent, a mix of sweet lotus oil and the salt of the sea. He would not be parted from her, he would make sure of it."
The Oath of Tyndareus is called upon when a Trojan prince kidnaps Helen of Sparta. Desperate to avoid leaving his son and wife, Odysseus fakes madness to prevent his going to war. But it is not meant to be, a man coming along hellbent of exposing the lie and ensuring Odysseus joins the war effort.

Summary
Many years into the Trojan War, Penelope continues her prayers for Odysseus's safety, and for his return home. She admits amongst all of these, that if it is still to be years before his return, she would take a single night with him over nothing at all, as long as he still eventually returns.
Goddess Hera listens, and grants her this one night with her husband.

And even then, Penelope had never really learned to stop talking to her ghosts.
