He hadn’t meant to take it with him.
Actually, thinking back, it might have been the same impulse that told him to walk to the Star that told him to pick it up. Really, he wanted to leave it underneath the concrete, because a human could do nothing with one and he would survive for longer without it. But then he thought about how it felt, how he felt, miles away from home, hiding in foreign darkness, waiting for something to happen, for someone to reach out and tell him that everything was going to be okay.
Terry looped the cold chain over his neck and ran.

Summary
Perspective and interpretation is a fickle thing. Like a prism, or any other object light enters through, there's a shift in its angle as it enters the object. Nothing changes but nothing stays the same is a commonly used paradox. Unfortunately, for all of its inconsistencies, the matter of perspective, more often than not, can be a game changer.
Or, AU where instead of seeing Douma's appearance as a blessing, his parents instead, believed it to be a curse. As it would appear, their stupidity, is a universal constant.
