When Eskel hears Jaskier singing his new song, Burn, Witcher, Burn, in an inn, smelling of sorrow and without his brother, he endeavours to figure out why that is. It may mean he has to leave the Path to fix his brother's mistakes (and potentially bash him over the head for his stupidity) but if that leads him and those around him to a new found family and actually learning how to deal with their emotions, that's probably for the best.

“Oh, are we drinking together now?” He asks drily. “I was under the impression that I was drinking and you were invading my room for a no doubt sinister purpose.”
“You invade my head, I invade your room.” She means it as a joke, but she feels Jaskier stiffen.

“You… said centaurs were myths,” Cirilla said after an indeterminable amount of time, squinting at Jaskier with her arms crossed over her chest.
“No,” Jaskier said, and Geralt couldn’t see his face from this angle but he could hear the smirk, “I said they were mythical creatures. If I recall correctly you were the one who told me you didn’t believe in their existence.” He paused briefly, rasping a hand over the stubble on his chin. “And I didn’t even exaggerate any of my songs!”
Years ago, before Geralt broke his heart in a bid to keep him safe, Jaskier taught Ciri about the myths and legends of the continent. Today, Ciri isn’t the only one in for a revelation.

He could still remember the day the Bell tolled for the pair, remembered how he’d found himself on his knees, hours later in the Grove, face gritty with dried tears, with his Companion standing silent sentry over him.
It’d been worse when the Bell had sounded for Van, Andrel dosing him and putting him to bed like he was a stripling again.
Delian had been short, almost cruel in a way he hadn’t known Companions could be, with a snarky comment about there being faster ways to take a final walk with the Shadow Lover if that’s what he sought.

Jaskier, oblivious to Geralt’s struggle, is quiet as Borch leaves, but it’s not like it matters; his heartbeat alone would have been enough to tip Geralt off. It’s almost deafening this morning, a portent of doom.
Geralt should send him away. He owes Jaskier this, he thinks; owes it to him to keep him safe – keep him alive – even if he hates Geralt for it. One last wish, carefully worded and utterly false, and he’d be on his way to safety. Geralt would shadow him to make sure no trouble would befall him on the way, unseen, and then leave him to a normal life, to father a child or two, to raise his legacy.
The very thought makes him want to throw up.
Geralt makes a different decision after Yennefer leaves him after the dragon hunt. It changes things, though they get worse before they get better.

Jaskier is a man of words; he sings, he chatters, he lectures. Geralt had expected him to do so when he had hurled lies and abuse. Instead Jaskier had spoken Geralt’s language, the way of actions: he had stood silently, and walked away, and left behind the dagger Geralt gifted him all those years ago. A rejection of Geralt’s protection, a severing of their bond, a parting cut so cleanly and sharply that it burns.
Or: After the dragon hunt, Geralt wants to make amends with Jaskier with a gift. That would be a lot easier if he could actually find Jaskier.
