Unfortunately for him, he ended up adding more than just heels, and when he looked at himself in the mirror, he felt a weird sense of happiness. It was a relatively simple outfit -- a red dress, one of those cool off the shoulder ones with a thigh slit, black opera-length gloves, red heels and a gold necklace. It was simple, but he panicked at how good it made him feel.
His phase of wearing this type of thing ended years ago, why did he still like it so much?! Despite his bit of panic, he didn't move to take it off or change. He just stared at himself in the mirror, and his chest ached with that weird feeling.

Summary
He prayed to whatever God that maybe he'd be put out of his misery again. The aching feeling in his gut felt worse than even when he was drowned. Honestly, he thought the last time he felt something like this was when he was drowned — a slow, painful death he felt every second of. At least he finally had a way to describe how this felt; the feeling right before you die, but dragged out for days.
He would throw up if it weren't for the fact he had never eaten in his many, many short-lived lives. Before this, he had never even felt his body's need for things like that. Now, it was one of the only things that plagued his mind.

He remembers crimson blood spilling down his client’s cheek. Remembers that his eyes were bright and focused as if he didn’t even feel the pain.
It could’ve been the shock, but he seemed as clear-headed as he had been before the shots popped off into the gala, his brows knitting as he shoved the card into Fit’s hands–
“If you need anything– anything– you call me.” He’d tried to hand it back, but the man had been insistent, “If I lost Richas tonight, I don’t know… I don’t know what I would’ve done.” He’d croaked, “Please, take it.”

“Derek.” Avery interrupts, firmer this time. It causes Derek to pause mid-spiral. This is new territory for him, he’s a totally different person when there isn’t a screen and a dire situation in front of him. He’s so certain he’s not what Avery thought he knew. But Avery reaches forward and pulls Derek in, leaving the gangly man to stumble against Avery’s shorter shoulder as he’s dragged into a hug.
“I’m just glad you’re alive.” Derek feels his eyes prickle and just gives into the urge to lean into the contact. He doesn’t even care how that must look right now.“Don’t think I’m not angry. I am. Three weeks and not even a word?” Avery’s voice raises, just a little, not enough that it’d disturb the neighbors, but enough for Derek to catch. “But that can wait.” Avery gives Derek one final firm squeeze before leading him into the apartment.

Derek Hutchins is dying. This is the only way he knows how to protect Avery. He just hopes Avery doesn't realize they're only a single wall's distance apart.
