Summary
After the Lazarus Pits and a year of training with the League, Talia sends Jason to Gotham for revenge. Except Jason isn’t as deep as she thinks. The thing is, he expected to see Bruce - Batman - and be livid. He let him die, replaced him. He should be mad.
He isn’t.
In the end, it’s hard to think of yourself as being replaced when you died. So yeah, he’s angry, but he’s not angry enough for revenge. Not like Talia wants him to be.
So he focuses on Red Hood and cleaning up Crime Alley, and scraps any ideas of revenge he had left. They’re unnecessary. Counterproductive, in fact, because now that he’s actually seen Bruce, all he really wants is to go home. Maybe have a conversation or two about how bad Bruce and Dick messed up, but at home.
Instead, he gets caught up in world altering magic from some criminal in over his head, and Jason finds himself tumbling through universes into a New York filled with heroes that he’s never even heard of and a lack of Gotham and Metropolis that can only mean one thing. This isn’t the world he knows.
All he wants is to get home, to make amends, to try again. Too bad none of them know he’s gone. Not that anyone would think to look for a dead boy.

Jason had come to dinner today. He’s allowing himself to be hopeful about this. They have dinner together every Sunday and everyone tries to be there, the whole bunch of them. Dick had missed those rare dinners with Bruce and Jason when both of them (himself and Bruce that is, though that’s changed recently) could stomach to be in the same room. Bigger table now, but Jason still sat at it.
“I’m leaving Gotham,” Jason blurts halfway through dinner, the first words he’s ever said this whole night, and Dick can feel every ounce of hope drain out of his body the same way Tim spits his drink out at Cass across him.
Or five times they had to watch Jason’s life through pictures, and one time he let them see it.

“Burder,” Hound says under his breath. Then, “Wait. You’re not really going to investigate it, are you?”
Fox stops. Hound does, too, shifting his weight, uneasy, like he senses he’s stepped into a trap. “Of course I’m going to fucking investigate it. It’s my job.”
“But. It’s a duck.”
“Wrong. It’s the Chancellor’s duck. And that makes it our problem.”
“Our?” Hound asks weakly.

It was so old it wasn’t even a holobook, fancy in its leather bindings and flimsi pages with gold lettering. “Back in the day, flower arrangements were used to send secret messages. Sometimes it was as simple as tying a bloom to someone’s door handle, or dozens of flowers in a bouquet. Servants used to make arrangements outside of foreign dignitaries’ doors to tell each other who was trustworthy and who weren’t, and the Queen would wear crowns weaved of fresh blossoms to convey her sincerity in her duties.” She sighed, a soft smile on her face as she plucked the book from the shelf and ran her fingers over the cover. “Nowadays it’s considered old fashioned. It’s all about what matches the dress and the room colors now.”
The Coruscant Guard gets a book on flower language. It doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things, but it does have a profound impact on them all the same.
