By the time Zoey was deep into the structural planning of Plan Twenty-Five, which involved string lights, a projected slideshow of their best memories, and a personally choreographed interpretive dance, Mira walked into the kitchen, took one look at the notebook spread across the table, and said:
"No."
Zoey looked up. "I haven't even explained it yet."
"You've been at this for two weeks." Mira picked up the notebook, looked at the sheer volume of failed plans, and set it back down. Her jaw was tight. "She's not coming out because she wants something. She's in there because something is wrong."

Summary
Zoey was sitting at the kitchen table.
Curled slightly inward, one leg tucked under her, fingers tapping rapidly against the surface in an uneven rhythm.
The apartment wasn’t loud.
Not really.
Rumi was on the couch, the TV playing quietly in the background. Mira was moving around the kitchen, putting something away, the soft clink of dishes barely noticeable.
Normal sounds.
Soft sounds.
But to Zoey,
it didn’t feel soft.
Or
The world is to loud even in the in the silence. Zoey doesn't know how to deal with it, and but her girls try to learn how to help her.

"You coming too Mir?" Rumi asked, following behind Zoey, buckets and nets in hand.
"Nuh-uh, nope." Zoey tutted, shaking her head as she saw Mira settle further into the beach chair at the mention of the water. "Not this time young lady."
"I'm older than yo–"
"No excuses." Zoey cut off Mira's protest, arms folded across her body, tapping her foot against the sand in an attempt to muster up her best 'I'm not mad, just disappointed' parent stance.
Mira raised an eyebrow challengingly, rolling her eyes when Zoey persisted, latching on and tugging at her forearm.
"Come on, let's go missy–"
"No!" Mira snapped in desperation as Zoey's strength had begun to lift her body scarily easily out of the beach chair and towards danger.
"No?" Zoey and Rumi chorused, each girl equally taken aback by the simple but serious decline. No hint of the usual playfulness or faux-defiance evident in Mira's tone.
"No." Mira repeated, returning her focus to the book positioned in her lap.

“Rumi, it’s late. Is everything ok?”
Rumi tried to answer but all that came out was a strangled moan.
“Rumi?” Celine was at Rumi’s bedside in an instant.
Rumi looked at Celine. She didn’t want her to know. But…but she had to.
“Rumi what’s wrong? Are you sick? Hurt?”
Once again the pain kept Rumi from responding. Instead she pointed to her body. At Celine’s confused look, Rumi then carefully, slowly, pulled up her shirt to reveal her patterns. The action brought spots to her vision. It felt like she was burning from the inside out.
“Rumi your patterns. They’ve grown.
OR
What if Rumi's patterns hurt? What if every time they grew they burned? What if Celine didn't hold back from touching Rumi's face out of fear of who she was, but out of fear of hurting her?

That’s her biggest problem really- when she goes to lie in her room at night and there’s not a single sound. Even leaving her balcony open doesn’t help; penthouse so high above the rest of the world the life of the city gets lost. That’s how Rumi feels, lying there in the dark with nothing but her own breathing heart to listen to– so far above it all that she might never find her way back down.

Summary
Rumi wasn’t born with a grudge against her soul; they used to be inseparable (two halves of one whole). She supposes most people still feel that way- after all, your daemon is part of you; someone to journey through life with and share in every high, comfort in every low.
It’s just that Rumi, and Atlas, tend to have a lot of lows and only so much comfort. Over the years their differing opinions do more to turn them against each other than not. Rumi is obsessed with keeping their secrets, no matter the cost. Atlas is sick of living in her shame, finding no fault in either of them.
What must it feel like to be so torn in two? To have such an internal struggle given a voice?
