Summary
“Talk about something, man,” Buck begs, and Eddie feels his words so close that he must’ve leaned over. “Stay awake.”
Eddie racks his mind for any coherent thoughts that could turn into his deathbed conversation, but it’s all too muddled at the moment.
“I hate everything of chocolate flavor,” he says instead. Right now Eddie’s sure he’d hate anything of any flavor, but it’s a small truth he’s never told Buck before. “L-like chocolate itself is fine, but— ice cream? Ugh. Puddings, too, cakes. Horrible.”
“What?” Buck asks. He looks equally confused by the confession and the topic Eddie chose in the first place. “But… what about—”
“I love whatever you make, though,” he adds right away. His breath gets heavy in between words. “No matter what y—”
Or, Eddie’s bleeding out, stuck in an elevator. Good thing that at least he has Buck to talk to. Right?

“And the way Diaz looks at him?” Sam goes on, and Buck starts to wonder if he made a list beforehand to have all the complaints ready. “Like fully-ass staring, doesn’t even blink. I was so sure he’s about to kiss him mid sentence.”
Buck drops a box, cuts the answer off. The dull, plastic clatter echoes through the empty kitchen like a gong.

Summary
“I think you’re ready,” Buck says. “And with four days to go.”
Eddie nods along, just because Buck looks so proud of himself, but he swallows, bracing for one more request.
“Actually,” he starts. If he could bring himself to curse Maddie, this would be the moment. “There’s one more thing.”
“What else?”
Eddie takes a breath, then another as he gathers all the strength in himself. “The actual date.” Maddie really went beyond when she was standing her conditions. “Like, I don’t know what to talk about, how to act and all that stuff.” Embarrassment burns like fire in his lungs, radiating to his cheeks. “Could you… show me?”
Or,
Maddie has plotted a master plan. Eddie really wishes she just asked for money as her fee.

Summary
The open plan of his house turns into a trap for him and his born-in curiosity. There’s no door in the way, nothing muffling Buck’s voice, and even if Eddie doesn’t listen for it, he can’t help overhearing the crackling tone coming from the laptop.
“...and why’d you leave your last place?”
Eddie bites down on the inside of his cheek as he puts on shoes, pretending in front of himself that he’s not eager to hear the answer.
“Uh, it wasn’t really mine,” Buck says, and Eddie hears the sheepish smile in his voice. “I was subletting.”

Summary
“Since when do you read newspapers?”
“Since they’re writing about us,” he says, and throws the paper on the table with a smack for emphasis.
“They’re writing about us?” Chimney catches the paper first, since it landed closest to him, but Eddie snatches it out of his grasp, knowing that it all comes down to him lately.
“Not us,” Buck says, as his eyes sweep over Hen and Chimney, before they pan straight at Eddie, then he adds, “About us.”
Eddie catches a glimpse of urgency in Buck’s gaze, something close to fear. He looks down again, ignoring the bold-lettered name of the press company that doesn’t tell him anything, skimming right to the article at the bottom of the first page.
