Summary
"Didn’t make any friends during orientation?”
She laughed- then stopped abruptly because that was actually not a joke. “Um…no. I don’t make friends easily.”
She waited for him to look at her with pity, or offer false reassurances. He looked mildly contemplative instead. “I think most people’s ‘friends’ are actually just acquaintances, anyway.”
Mel blinked. “You think so?”
“It’s important to remember that most people are bullshitting you like…at least sixty percent of the time.”
Mel wasn’t sure if this extended to him. If it did, would he tell her? Probably not.

Summary
Actually, Mel's excited about a lot of things going into the new school year. She’s excited to co-teach with Dr. Mohan and Mr. Langdon. She’s excited to continue supporting the kids on her caseload from the previous year, and she knows writing their IEPs will go so much better now that she knows them and their families a little. She’s excited that her Physics class will be entirely made up of students she taught in Chemistry the previous year; they were a great group.
There are things to worry about, too. Co-teaching with two new people again. The daily possibility that she’s going to do something overwhelmingly embarrassing in front of Langdon. Still not knowing where she should go during her prep periods. That she’s going to be just as alone as she’s always been at work, but with some added disappointment because she’s let her hopes get up, just a little.
There’s no way that she and Langdon can co-teach as well as she hopes. She’s sure her bubble will burst soon enough, that her crush will fade, and everything will settle back to baseline.
(It doesn't.)

Summary
He allows this moment to be special: Melissa and him, sitting side by side at a bar counter in wonky wooden stools, him playing around with the idea of drawing their chairs closer together, feeling the shift of his leg against hers, watching her face after.
He knows what he would find. Her cheeks would be pink, and her brows would be drawn and she would not be able to look at him, fully flustered.
The thought of it, the very thought of the sight of her in such a way makes him hungry.
Or, Frank has a crush on Mel. He does not think of himself as special.

Summary
The first bets were placed shortly after the wedding ring disappeared from Langdon’s finger one rainy day in August, never to be seen again. Trinity thinks it’s funny, though she isn’t the most invested, until it all ends up coming to a head in a way more awful than any of them could have predicted.

“You okay?” He asks softly.
Mel swallows and nods. “Yeah. I just—” Her voice catches and she laughs under her breath. “You’re— this is—”
“New?” He offers.
“Different. Good different.” She corrects, pushing a fallen hair away from Franks forehead. “Always good with you.”
Frank presses another kiss into her lips. “Good.”

Summary
That’s his bright spot, though—the thing he clings to on his first day, then continues to hold onto tightly thereafter: Mel.
Where he had felt out of step with everyone else, he and her were right on beat together, dancing around the ED, just as they had on her first day. He had been shocked how easily they picked up where they’d left off. There was no wariness towards him, no undercurrent of judgement, no hesitation to let him treat a patient. She didn’t hold him back, she pushed him forward. It was what he needed more than anything.

“You wanna sext me at work?” He leans back, raising his eyebrows. “That’s part of your plan to help me deal with keeping my hands to myself there?”
“I-I guess you’re right. I just thought it’s one of the only times we’re not— well, we’re not like this. Maybe that isn’t— I mean, if it’s a problem we can just—”
“It’s not a problem,” he cuts her off with his mouth.

Summary
Her head is a little spinny and overwhelmed as she learns what it’s like to date Frank Langdon instead of just be weirdly co-dependent best friends with Frank Langdon. She starts a new section of her journal titled Observations, Hypotheses, and Research Questions (RQs) - FAL where she jots some of her newly acquired data down, just to get it out of her head, mostly little things like:
Observation: He sleeps much more deeply after an orgasm, but he also seems embarrassed about it.
Hypothesis: He is nervous about saying I love you.She starts a sub-tab for Pet Names and Compliments (PN&C) and the first RQ under PN&C is:
Why does he sometimes say “perfect” during sex?Bookmarked by brighterdaze

Summary
Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.
Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.
Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.
He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.

Summary
All of Mel's boyfriends.
Mel would never presume that Frank Langdon is boyfriend material.
Those were the words Princess had used once—though in a very different tone, after she’d stared a little too long at the new radiologist who’d come down for a consult.
“What about me?” Frank had said, winking at her like a dog begging for a treat.
It had made Mel feel inexplicably sad.
Set some time after season two.

“We’re friends, aren’t we?” she asks a bit quieter, like she was worried someone would hear. He hadn’t exactly called her his friend, but considering the fact that he would find her in any crowded room, it may have been a given.
“Yeah.” He gives her a bit of a smile, but it feels a little sad, maybe even a touch pitiful. “Friends,”

Summary
All things considered, it was probably for the best that Mel King was a Beta. She couldn't imagine being overwhelmed by scent and instinct 24/7 like an Alpha or an Omega, so she really couldn't be too upset on that front. Not to mention also the other social layers to the designations, no thank you.
Being a Beta was safe and boring. Dr. Langdon didn't seem to mind befriending them either, so that was a plus.
As hectic as the Pitt could be, the return of her favorite doctor did a lot for Mel's peace of mind, even if he smelled kind of good and was kind of too nice to her. He was a little bullheaded about it, but that's just how Alphas were. Right? Yeah.

Summary
“What do you think about the severe rash case? Think you want in on it or can I take it?”
Frank turns to face her, which makes her look at him. His eyebrow is raised, an expression of focus on his face. “I think I want you to take a break.”
Mel laughs, glances away before making eye contact again. “That’s a funny joke.”
“No, I'm serious. Mel, go take fifteen,” he says with a firm tone.
“But I don’t need a break.”
Frank places a gentle, yet strong, hand on her shoulder. Mel glances down at it, a bit too stunned to speak; her brain trips over itself. Frank rarely touches her like this. It should be overstimulating — and if it were anyone else, it very well might’ve been — but instead the weight of his hand on her shoulder grounds her. Becomes an anchor.

Summary
He’s sick of her. Sick to death. Sick to the bone. She’s like a fucking tumor: stubborn, infectious, latches on to the blood vessels, sinks its row of miniature teeth into the vulnerable thin membranous parts, her hungry spindly roots finding her forever home and she’ll not let anything weed her out, come hell or high water.
She’s a tough gray thing, his doomless beloved nightmare, incomparable, singular in her intractable tortuous stinkfest. Unmanageable. A foul brat through and through, whose feeble swiss-cheese brain can’t comprehend the meaning or function of boundaries. He supposes he can’t blame her much, not when their darling rotten mother has decided that Andrew is Ashley’s de facto parent, caretaker, best friend, mentor, and babysitter, but she’s no longer the little snotty-nosed kid who stuck to the bottom of his shoe like a chewed out piece of fucking gum.
*
Or, to make his relationship work with Julia, Andrew caves in to her suggestion: hook Ashley up with someone so she wouldn't focus on Andrew so much anymore. Unfortunately, Andrew doesn't calculate the damage it could do to his psyche.

Summary
They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

Summary
Twelve hours and forty eight agonizing minutes had passed since Ashley left.
The end of the cigarette burns his fingers. He makes an effort to still his trembling hands so he can light up another one. He’d tried the summoning circle countless times, promising the Entity ten souls, twenty, the entire apartment complex, to no avail. The Entity was adamant about not welcoming Andrew back to his realm. When he got his hands on that stupid ball of eyes, he was going to punt it straight to hell.
Andrew wonders if the cricket, drowning and half-dead, ever misses the worm. He feels achingly empty without a parasite there to leech his nutrients, carve a home into his viscera, twist into his cavities.
they just can't seem to live with (or without each) other. canon compliant for the shots & such route.

Summary
He always came running back to her, especially concerned whenever she hurt herself. He would patch her up and kiss the band-aid while she blubbered fat crocodile tears. She drank in these scraps of his attention the same way a dog might eat barf off the floor. But those temporary moments of affection were growing farther and fewer in between, and she could only inflict so many injuries on herself—god knows the hag wouldn’t pay a hospital bill, not for her.
So she was thrilled to have discovered a foothold, another way to worm back into his good graces. Sure, maybe it went against convention to launch a seduction campaign on your own brother, but it’s not like she had a reputation to protect anyway. Andrew, on the other hand, very much did. He’s a coward who loves to hide behind her, always has been. Ashley knows he would never give himself permission to do anything unless she started it.

Summary
Mel King was a creature of habit.
There was a specific sort of choreography to her life beyond the chaos of the Emergency Department. A carefully controlled routine, a color-coded calendar, a rigid set of rituals that kept her grounded enough to keep showing up day after day, to keep on doing the work that was required of her to save lives.
Everything was going fine for Mel. Her personal life was predictable, unexciting, and perfectly fulfilling, thank you very much.
Enter Frank Langdon, agent of chaos.
