“It doesn’t look like Tou-san’s penmanship.” Yukio tilts his head to peer over Rin’s shoulder. “Does it look familiar to you?”
“Wait.” Rin lifts his head so abruptly that he nearly hits Yukio’s chin. “Uh, never mind. I can’t really tell.”

As Shiemi rests her chin on her hand, a few strands of her hair slip from behind her ear. Several red spots of petechiae peek out from under her collar, like pinpricks, left behind from the grip of Mayuko’s hair. They’ll fade in a few days. Even so, it must have been painful.
Yukio flips another page, running his thumb along the waxy texture of the paper of his textbook without reading any of the print. “Yesterday,” he begins, “I was really impressed by you and Kamiki-san.”

At times, he wonders if Rin is truly afraid of anything at all. Sitting this close to him, Yukio can see the slight tension running between his shoulder blades. He can see the crease along the corners of Rin’s lips as his fingers trace the hilt of his sword.
