Fire was the thing that took them away, the attorney had told him. Chimney looked up the report as soon as they got back to the station. Cause of death, smoke inhalation. Their dryer had ignited while they were sleeping. A neighbor had called 9-1-1 after seeing the flames and told the firefighters on scene where to find the nursery and they were able to get to Casey in time.
“If you don’t want to, that's ok," Eddie said. "It's a huge responsibility, but don’t say no because you think you won't be good at it. You’re amazing with Chris and you're practically his second parent. I was a teenager when I became a dad. If I can figure it out, you can.”
“Eddie, you called me last week upset because you feel like you don't have the parenting thing figured out.”
“Okay, low blow, but what did you tell me?”
Buck sighed. “I told you that you love him and are fighting to do what’s best for him, which is the most important thing you can do as a parent.”
“I know you would love this kid with everything you have and you would fight for him just as hard as you would fight for Chris.”

“You’re exhausting,” Eddie says. The words slip out in the heat of his frustration.
Exhausting because his selfishness has taken him away from Eddie and Christopher, and his absence has proven that somehow Buck has become a vital piece of their lives. Without him, Eddie unravels.
Exhausting because Buck brings out feelings that Eddie frantically tries to smother. Things he hadn’t considered about himself until he joined the army when it had already been too late. His vows to Shannan still meant something to him even when he was running away. Eddie’s feelings had only been stirrings back then. Somehow Buck ignites them in full force.

If Hen had any heartbreak left in her, watching Eddie’s grief would have done it. After they’d passed Buck off to the hospital staff, Eddie pulled away from them and sat in the furthest corner of the waiting room, silent and unresponsive. It was as if he wasn’t even there, like he was the one who couldn’t wake up.
“You’re in love with him, aren’t you?” Hen said. She rarely asked questions she didn’t know the answer to.
“It doesn’t matter,” Eddie said blankly.

“No, it’s not,” Buck shouted. “It was so easy for me to love him. Maybe it was just hard for you to love me. I have been a part of Christopher’s life since he was seven and I have loved him the whole time. I would have died for him. I-I nearly did.”

This was evidenced well by Declan’s father. Niall had been a selfish man. Instead of strengthening Lindenmere by marrying for an alliance, he chose a farmer’s daughter for his wife. Magic was a dangerous thing, and he did not shield his kingdom from it. He used it to take what we wanted: power, riches, enchantments. The comfortable, lavish life he had created ended violently.
So, it had been foolish of Declan to fall in love with one of his spies.

“You know?” Robert said, his face now shocked and pale. “You know what a freak that boy is and you haven’t executed him yet?”
“Never speak about my husband that way again,” Ronan growled.
“He married a knight?” Robert gasped. He finally looked as afraid as Ronan wanted him.

“Adam, are you confessing this under some sort of duress?” Gansey asked.
“No sire,” Adam said with resignation.
“The boy will be executed at midday tomorrow,” his father said.
Gansey could not bear to look at Adam any longer. His gaze slid up to the crown and in the very back he saw Ronan pushing forward, his eyes ablaze with fury. He opened his mouth to shout something and somehow Gansey knew he was about to confess to the magic himself to save Adam’s life. His father would have exactly what he wanted and probably kill Adam for good measure.
