The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.
The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin's line with bright red hair.
(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).
(Bagginshield, Gimli/Legolas) In which recovery takes time, the dead members of the Company take to watching Gimli as though he’s a soap opera, the living struggle with being left behind, Legolas is confused, Khuzdul is abused, and Thorin is four feet and ten inches of guilt and anger.

“Though,” Thorin finally says, lifting his eyes up from the flames, “I’m afraid the climb will be the easy part.”
And maybe it will be, or maybe it won’t. Bilbo can’t say for sure until he’s done it, if he makes it up to the hidden door sewn into the mountainside or if he’ll be unlucky and fall. But Thorin’s words put him more at ease, as they’re meant to, and that night, as Bilbo stretches himself beneath a tree, the view of the mountain taking up more sky than sky itself, his mind drifts from the fears of what waits tomorrow towards something else: A small smile, lined in gold.

Sam admired the watercolor landscape Frodo had painted in the garden back in the spring. It was mounted by a wooden frame near the entrance to Bag End, which Sam had hung himself.
“I want this to be the absolute first thing our guests see when they come inside,” Sam recalled himself saying to Frodo. “It’s too beautiful to be left in a stack in the office, dear. If it were up to me, none of those drawings would be stuck in those stacks. They would fill every corner, every wall, so everyone could see them.”
An idea struck Sam. He considered it for a brief second before shaking his head in dismay. How could he possibly learn to paint? And even if he did, how could he possibly match the beauty of the creations of his beloved?Bookmarked by awkwarng3
