Summary
Dr. Ryland Grace cries a lot.
From weeping quietly to full-on snot-sobs, he falls apart at least once on most days, and Carl understands it to be a coping mechanism that just seems to work for Grace. Growing up mostly without a father meant Grace never had anyone tell him to Act Like A Man, Dammit (as if men categorically never cried, but there’s generational baggage for you), and so he’s just very much in touch with his own emotions, and crying is his main way of dealing with them.
Carl is no longer surprised to see Grace crying in the lab; he merely tries to categorize his tears so he can jump in and help him deal with whatever he’s trying to process.
This story is a companion piece to Four times Ryland Grace got close to someone for a short time, and one time he stayed, but it can stand on its own.
