“We’ll be friends forever, right?” Your pinky finger, small and full of promise, stuck out to the young boy sitting across from you. Grass swayed around you as the wind transfixed your hair into strange shapes the way it always did, giving Daryl the same treatment.
Daryl looked up at you curiously before he slowly sat up beside you. The blue in his eyes disappeared behind his toothy grin as he plucked a white wildflower from the ground. Sliding the flower past your ear and locking his pinky with yours, Daryl made a promise. “Friends, forever.”

He’d tried bringing back the same “King Steve” charm he’d maintained throughout high school, using as much Farrah Fawcett hairspray that the Earth’s carbon levels could permit. Still, nothing.
