Olruggio wrapped his arms around Qifrey’s waist and pulled him close. He rested his chin on Qifrey’s shoulder, warm and real and solid. Qifrey returned the gesture, his eye sliding shut. He let out a breath. They remained that way for a long while, leaning against each other. This could not ease Qifrey—he’d managed a delicate balance that allowed him to indulge in these small ways while retaining his ever-present fear—but Olruggio’s weight became heavier and heavier as he relaxed into it.
Qifrey could do these things for Olruggio; he could take care of him, though it would never make up for everything that he had done.

Qifrey, most days, had a hard time looking directly at Olruggio. If he looked right at Olruggio, he’d see the golden tassel, innocently attached to the point of Olruggio’s cap, and his stomach would twist until he felt like he was going to hurl. He bounced on the balls of his feet, suddenly feeling uncertain, because if Olruggio was the one crying it’d be even harder to look at him.

He’d reasoned that it was simply that he could not entertain it; true pleasure, and the kind of comfort that he imagined should come with it, had always been far from his reach.

Three vignettes set through Qifrey’s life, at its beginning, middle and end. An exploration of Qifrey's two most constant companions– Death always looms close to Qifrey, but so does Olruggio. These are snippets of hope and despair. Of nostalgia and melancholy. Of comfort, and ultimately, of grief.
In The Great Hall, a young Qifrey is plagued by headaches he cannot explain, and will not talk about. Despite this, his loved ones care for him.
In his Atelier, Qifrey's bedroom is a dark and secluded tomb no one wishes to enter, himself included.
And out in the fields, under the starry sky, Olruggio shares a drink with his dearest friend.

Of course he did. The Consent of the Crown was a test taken by witches as young as seven. Would-be apprentices only being given one chance wasn’t a measure of strictness. It was a way of pretending something was more important than it really was, like handing a child a piece of rock sugar and asking them to keep the diamond safe. The child got a feeling of accomplishment, and the adult got time to spend drawing real magic.
Agott nodded. “I won’t be long.”

“What…” Ritsu’s eyes travel up, and up and up, until they reach the top of the towering spire of blond hair, and then back down, to the familiar, unwelcome face attached to it. “Ah! It’s you!” Ritsu exclaims. “That guy!”
“ ‘That guy…?’ ” the other kid says, then snaps his fingers in realization. “Oh! You mean when we met the other day.” He sends Ritsu a dazzling smile. “I guess I should properly introduce myself. I’m Hanazawa Teruki. You can call me Teru, though. Everyone does.”
