“You mean to tell me,” he says, “that the substitute’s full, government name was Education Teach?”
“Edward, I’d expect,” says Lucius, giving Stede a look ordinarily reserved for the particularly dim-witted.

Summary
At the ripe young age of 35, in 1715, Ed had been standing in line at the afterlife looking at the possibility of eternal jobs. He’d meant to choose demon, he really had. He also didn't count on the Angel at the processing center pulling the wrong lever, but he's glad they did.
Ed dies before he ever even gets to meet Stede, accidentally becomes a cupid in the afterlife.
