When you were alive (for a given value of “alive,” anyway) it felt like you were constantly wading through a swimming pool; half of you in the real world, and half of you on Prospit. In the bubbles it feels like you are fully submerged, and it’s given you a kind of... clarity, maybe. Understanding. Brought you closer to something resembling personhood, in a weird sort of way. “—I hurt you,” Susie finished. She chewed on the concept, the edges of her voice frantic, her throat thick. “Because you deserved it.”
“Yes.” Kris pressed her hands against their chest. They smiled in a way that failed to be reassuring. Each desperate breath shuddering through their lungs confirmed everything Susie didn't want to know. “S’fine. It’s okay.”
Kris burned like a charred pan straight out of the oven, or an oil fire stoked by liquor. Susie reeled away. “You—you were trying to set me up,” Susie accused, trying to edge words around the chasm opening in her gut. “You were trying to get me to hit you.”
Kris wants Susie to hurt them. They need her to hurt them. Susie isn't as on board with the idea as they are.
