    It's a weird feeling to read a fic and feel good after reading it. I think there's appeal to the sugary sweet fluff, the everyone-gets-exploded angst, but there's a real appeal in a well-done mix of the two that I really like whenever I stumble across it. This fic does exactly that, and it's amazing. It's this wonderful character study of Team Snakemouth, with the main focus on a single plot point: they're all struggling with sleep in some way. The way this SqueakyClam characterizes them in each section, how their past seeps into their present thoughts is aspirational as hell. This next sentence is bias-ridden but my favorite part was Vi's, mostly because of how it builds on her time at the Bee Kingdom. And it's just like... super cute! I like it when they get together and cuddle and they're happy together. Like the first sentence stated, I felt rather pleased when I got to the end, enough that I think it deserves a bookmark here.

    It also has bug facts at the end as a reward.

    shit just kino af. Many works in this tag are very good at getting emotions across but it's very rare you come across a story that REALLY provokes deeper level thought like this. The entire dilemma is about the Everlasting Sapling, and whether or not it should have been destroyed or not. Both sides (Leif and Venus) are done super well here, and the characterization done both in this fic and the game itself make it probably the most interesting read i've experienced. because there really isn't a right answer, it's up to you the viewer to decide. in lieu of having a de-facto 'right or wrong' answer established, though, i thought the ending was really nice as well (they get to hang out and have a good time). it's kind of insane this was the FIRST work in the tag and I hope to find more like it. read this shit!!!

    Pheromone assault is considered a serious crime in Bugaria and with good reason: pheromones can cause even the nicest of bugs to lose all sense of self and personality, and become utterly subservient to the whims of the one controlling them, even if it means attacking their friends and loved ones with the intent to harm... or kill. And then there is the chance of causing one afflicted with pheromones to become uncontrollably... aroused.

    When Kabbu is forced to fight Vi and Leif over a broken vase and his pre-Awakening mating drive is unintentionally triggered, the beetle finds himself struggling to cope. Burdened by guilt, past trauma, a crushing secret, and a love he feels he cannot share, Kabbu can only see himself spiralling downwards. If only he knew that his hidden affections were being reciprocated by someone who has no idea how to deal with such feelings. If only both could get past their denial and their guilt. And yet Team Snakemouth have faced many challenges together before and their bonds have remained resolute. They will not allow this to be any different.

    REVIEW:

    Before you read this story, if you're not in the mindset/mood to read smut, then I would personally stop reading at the end of Chapter 13--the two chapters afterwards are mostly tying up loose ends and aren't that important to the plot as the rest of the story is. The rest of the story before Chapter 15, as stated in the tags, is M rated and doesn't get that explicit: at worst it gets a little haughty in the language and imagery.

    I didn't give this one a chance before-the concept kind of repelled me, and I thought I wouldn't really enjoy it given my previous track record. Once I started, though, I was hooked immediately. The Price of Silk is an insanely polished, skillful story which tackles some more adult themes compared to what you might usually see in the Bug Fables tag. In particular, most of the story revolves around the theme of intimacy and how different characters internalize those sorts of feelings based on their past experiences. Kabbu and Vi's relationship is just wonderfully executed, and while it's hard to really say anything meaningful about it without spoiling the biggest plotpoints of the story, just know both of them are given some extra backstory and prior context that greatly deepens their characters and makes their relationship with intimacy all the more captivating.

    It tackles these complex topics while also having a super interesting plot about a new Dead Lander threat that roams Bugaria. These two plots end up intertwining and the climax of the story (with a massive fight scene in Chapter 13) closes up both threads insanely well, with some of my favorite writing in the Bug Fables tag being in the aforementioned fight. This fic is slowburn--it takes a while for a lot of the best parts about it to be fully realized and acted upon, and you have to put your trust in the story that it will reach those parts eventually. These chapters are long, and it can be a bit of a slog sometimes if you're not able to get fully invested into it.

    But when you give this story the time of day, the attention it needs to prosper, you are in for an unbelievably good narrative. These characters are interesting, the worldbuilding done in every chapter keeps on revealing more and more information that contextualizes everything done in the past like three times over, all of the prose is deftly crafted and fun to read, and I am very confident in saying there is something really special underneath the surface. I highly recommend you at the very least give the first chapter or two a shot, as if you like them, you will 100% enjoy the rest of the story.

    Some absolutely wonderful stuff in this fic and I highly recommend reading if you fw kabbu. For how short of a time frame it covers (only basically covering a day, also happening before all the stuff with The Beast happens) it's a lot of really nice stuff about kabbu judging his self worth after all the shit with kali happens and how he eventually finds that sort of comfort from vi and leif who have to really yank him from the brink and remind him that he is indeed loved and shit. Very high density of some very, very nicely written lines which all hit like uppercuts, especially near the end when it has a big emotional resolution/catharsis and it calls back to all the stuff that's happened before. It's a bit on the longer side (almost 30k for 3 chapters) so be prepared to hard commit for like 20-30 minutes per chapter, but it's written well enough that you can very easily forgive it.
