Summary
Then like an anomaly in one of his datasets, a green OPEN tag appears next to one of the restaurants. Shane squints his eyes, having difficulty seeing properly without his glasses.
Irina's Kitchen
4.02 stars
3 reviewsShane doesn't bother reading them. He taps on the website and waits for it to load. Only to be met with error.
Sighing he exits the page and keeps on scrolling. Nothing that is open catches his interest and the rest are closed. He's wondering how stale celery would taste dipped in pickle juice when his eyes land on Irina's Kitchen once more.
There's a phone number under the address. Shane bites his lower lip and wonders if he should call.
A woman with an accented voice picks up after the 5th ring.
“Hello?”
“Uh, hey, are you guys still open?”

Bookmarker's Notes
Shane tries really hard to not read into it too much. Ilya is just being nice to him, because Ilya is one of the kindest people Shane's ever met. This is still a business. Shane pays him, he provides him with a service. And as a bonus, they're on good terms with each other. That's all.
But Shane can't get that one sentence out of his for the rest of the night.
Call me on my phone if you need me.
If you need me.
Need me.

Summary
Shane Hollander arrives in Vegas with a question he hasn’t spoken out loud.
It isn’t complicated, exactly. It’s just the kind of question that requires honesty he isn’t sure he’s ready for - about what he and Ilya Rozanov have been doing for the past few years, about what six months of silence after Sochi actually meant, and about whether any of it is worth staying close to or whether he finally needs to go.
He gets his answer in a locked bathroom at the NHL Awards.
Ilya spends the summer convinced that Shane is fine. Upset? Yes. Angry? Definitely. But Shane always felt things fiercely despite what everyone said about him when he had his back turned. He’d calm down over the summer and then he’d be there like he always had been. He fills the silence with discipline and routine and the comfortable certainty that later is still available to him.
He’s wrong.
By the time Ilya understands what he actually lost, Shane is already gone; and Ilya is left trying to find a way back to someone who closed the door long before Ilya had ever thought to just walk through it.

Bookmarker's Notes
He had a plan. He had come back from Moscow with a plan - the comfortable deferrals stripped away, the thing he felt finally acknowledged for what it was. He was going to find the words and say them properly. Not hand Shane a room number and go back to his room and wait. Not give him the minimum and call it enough. Not anymore.
That plan had assumed Montreal.
Five hours away. Same division. The same rotation that had made later feel like a reasonable position to operate from from five years.
It had not accounted for this.
He thought about the bathroom again. About Shane’s face before he’d walked out, the door closing behind him with a sound that had been very quiet and very final. He thought about three in the morning is his Vegas hotel room, the way he had checked his phone and found nothing and told himself: he just needs time.
He thought about Svetlana. /Tell him before he stops waiting for you./
He was starting to think he understood what she had meant by that.
(...)
“I know what groveling is.”“Do you?” Marlow looked at him sideways. “Because every time I’ve watched you want something, your version of going after it looks a lot like waiting for it to come to you.”
(...)
“Some of them won’t,” Marlow agreed. “And those people will deal with it, and if they don’t then that’s their problem and we will handle that as a team. But most of them… most of them are going to react the way we did.”“Which is to say,” Carmichael added. “Surprised that you managed to pull Hollander, but not at all surprised that you somehow managed to mess it up.”
(..)
He was eating the bird food as Hayden liked to call it. It was a performance enhancing diet that he’d been eating now for so long that it stopped feeling like a choice and just felt like how he ate, the same way composure had stopped feeling like a choice and started feeling like just how he was. He made note of it and filed it under things to examine later after his run.He was not ready to examine it yet.
His diet was fine.
He was fine.

Summary
Shane should be here right now, should be in Ilya’s house. Ilya should be teasing him about being picky while going through delivery options for food on his phone. Shane should be discovering that Ilya has ginger ale in the fridge and the protein bars Shane mentioned liking in an interview in his pantry. He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. Shane should be fed and showered and ready to curl up in bed with Ilya tonight.
But Shane is in a hospital. And Ilya is here.
He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.
“Hey, you’ve reached Shane Hollander-”
Ilya closes his eyes and lets Shane’s voice roll over him.

“Doctors confirmed a broken collarbone, some really bad bruising on his ribs, and a concussion, but they’re about to do an MRI, too, just to make sure everything looks good besides that.” He doesn’t know why he’s saying this, really, doesn’t know why Ilya fucking Rozanov is getting the same answer Hayden’s wife and Shane’s parents’ voicemails got, but he continues anyway. “He was really confused in the ambulance, apparently. They kept telling him coach would call his parents and tell them what happened, but he kept telling them-”
Oh.
Oh.
The doctor had asked if there was someone else in Shane’s family who needed a call when Hayden first got here. We tried letting him know his coach and his dad would be informed, but he keeps insisting we tell someone he’s okay because he’ll worry. Is there someone not listed in his emergency file we should contact?
Jesus Christ Hayden wishes his wife was here right now.
“Telling them what?” Rozanov demands, and beneath the irritation, his voice isn’t quite as steady as it should be.
“I’ll call you back,” he says, very abruptly at the end of what he can process at one time when he’s getting new information on all fucking sides.
“What?” Rozanov says, sound furious and disbelieving at the same time. “Pike, I swear if you-”
Hayden hits end call.

Summary
After two months of being on Rozanov watch post him being dumped by Montreal Jane, the Raiders all breathe a sigh of relief when their captain goes back to his usual happy self after All-Stars.
Cliff, Victor, and Connor notice that the timing of Ilya’s good mood coincides strangely well with the speculation (read: open secret) that Hollander and Rozanov definitely banged it out sometime during that weekend and after some theorizing, they’re pretty sure their captain has had a years long crush on Hollander and that his happiness hinges on making his giant crush on Shane Hollander come to fruition.
Of course, as his friends, they need to help him to the best of their abilities.

Bookmarker's Notes
Ilya still has no idea what’s happening. All he knows is that Shane burst through the door approximately two minutes after he got home and got right to pacing and ranting about people knowing something and whether or not Ilya had strong opinions on playing with other people on his wing. Ilya’s pretty sure he heard “kill Marleau, how hard could it be to dissolve a hundred kilos in acid,” and had briefly wondered if he should worry. At one point, Shane had paused to ask whether or not Ilya had a waterproof tarp and looked highly offended when the answer turned out to be no.
“Why don’t you have one?” Shane had asked incredulously.
“Why would I have one? What do I use it for?”
“Camping?” Shane had said, like it was obvious.

Bookmarker's Notes
"Maybe they'll finally just date," Hammersmith said. "Like, properly."
"Maybe," Victor said.
Connor was quiet for a second, "Or maybe Hollander asks Roz to marry him."
Nobody laughed.
"I mean," Carmichael said, carefully, "that would be—"
"Good," Connor said. "That would be good." He said it without qualification. Then, a beat later: "But."
He looked around the corridor.
The look moved through the group the way it moved through a locker room when someone said the thing everyone was thinking and the room needed a second to land on it.
"Wait," Hammersmith said.
"Yeah," Connor said.
"If they get serious," Hammersmith said.
"Hollander's in Montreal," Cliff said.
The corridor went very quiet.
"And Roz is in Boston," Connor said.
"And if they get serious," Victor said.
"One of them moves," Carmichael said.
Everyone looked at each other.
"He wouldn't," Connor said. Not as a certainty. As the thing you said first, before you'd thought it all the way through.
"He might," Cliff said.
"He would," Hammersmith said. "For that. He would."
