After that one counseling session few months after Vancouver, Scott has promised himself one thing— that he would spend his whole life from then forward in doing everything to make Tessa happy; sleep in her hospital room’s couch for days after her second surgery, leave in the middle of a good date when she calls him crying in pain alone in the rink, drive back to Canton just after getting home to get her laptop because she’s too sick to pack her things herself the night before, sleep beside her on nights she’s too restless to sleep, and win their second Olympic gold medal.
But their second gold medal in Pyeongchang was not his final act of love. His final act of love was letting her go—because he knows, no matter how much he is willing to give her the whole world, she deserves someone who wouldn’t even leave her alone in that hospital room the first time around.
