Summary
Mulder steps into her without warning, grasping the sides of her face, tilting her chin back up and looking at her like that, and at first she mistakes it and starts, instinctively, to lean in towards him. I think it’s remotely plausible that someone might think you’re hot. But then his hands are combing up through her hair systematically, as though this is a grade school lice check, as though the U.S. government’s most elite covert forces have somehow hidden a listening device in her hair without her knowledge. His fingertips grazing her scalp would be divine if the whole thing weren't so bizarre.
**After the events of s1e17 E.B.E., Mulder and Scully check each other for listening devices, with unexpectedly sexy (and emotional) results.**

Having recently discovered her own infertility, being around all the happiness of her nephew's impending arrival a heaviness weighs on her more than she'd expected. So when she suspects that her dead sister has been calling her from beyond the grave to lead her to her daughter, Scully feels she has to step in, and step up. She feels a connection to that little girl and needs to make sure she's cared for, so when Emily is orphaned she knows she'll have to adopt Emily. Mulder of course is right there by her side, and together they explore adopting a three year old girl, finding out more about that girl's origins, and exactly what happened to Scully's stolen ova.

Summary
This is an alternate ending and extension of the story 'Fierce Midsummer All Ablaze' (which is now 'Part 1' of this series).
In 'Fierce Midsummer', Mulder & Scully develop an agreement to attend events as each other’s ‘plus one’ over the years. In this story, 'Certain Obscure Things', Scully agrees to go as Mulder’s guest on a trip to Oxford, to visit his old friend and mentor John.
It can be read as a standalone story, but it's probably more fun to read after reading 'Fierce Midsummer'.
"As the plane reaches cruising altitude above the Eastern Seaboard, Scully takes a sip of her champagne, and looks at Mulder, fast asleep in the seat next to her. For once—in the unusual comfort of business class—he is able to sleep, and she is awake. 'Four days away together, no work,' she thinks."
This is a completed story; further chapters will be posted as I complete the final edits.

“Mulder pauses a beat and then resumes, as if the formalities, the celebrations and the other guests are all brief if not unwelcome interruptions to an ongoing, years-long conversation. He doesn't ask her to dance, he doesn't gaze at her meaningfully, and he doesn't push her knowingly towards the bouquet toss. Instead, they lean, shoulder to shoulder, against the bar, while he asks for her views on some anatomical issues pertaining to lycanthropy.”
