Karen wrapped her gloved hands around his, and her sky-blue eyes welled up with knowing sadness. Of course. He should have known she would assume Foggy would reach out to talk about Matt. He was all they had in common anymore. Foggy took a shuddering breath, unsure of how to approach the topic. When he said he saw Matt, he didn’t mean he stopped by to leave a bouquet or to light a few votive candles, and he didn’t want Karen to have the wrong idea.

"Setting a solid barrier between himself and the others was borne out of necessity: Jake could not keep them safe if they were in the way. Steven was to be kept oblivious, that was non-negotiable, and Marc carried far too much guilt for Jake to be effective. The wall was vital, and it worked well for years. But everything was different now; Steven was no longer kept in the dark, and Marc, while not totally over the whole guilt thing, was beginning to come to terms with what was and was not his to carry. Keeping Marc and Steven at arm's length had been vital in keeping the whole thing functioning, but Jake would be lying if he said he didn't also enjoy the hell out of it. Summary
Today wasn’t supposed to go like this. They knew this would be hard, they all did, but Marc and Steven had apparently hammered everything out over the course of the past several days about how this day should go. There had been discussions and agreements and arguments. The only thing lacking was notarized signatures, Marc had joked, and in retrospect, Layla realized how incredibly naive she’d been to assume that because Marc could crack jokes about a topic as serious as this one, then it was a step in the right direction. A good sign this would all go as intended. But of course, nothing was ever that easy.
Maybe he and Steven should have made their agreement legally binding, though how anyone could ever enforce that, she would never know.
