The game’s creators, their wardens, wanted him to start thinking like that. They wanted him to be desperate, to cling to life with everything he had, even if it meant destroying somebody else’s.
Unfortunately for them, Kazutoshi had already learned long ago that the world hated him and wanted him dead, and that every single second spent defying that fate was him raising a massive middle finger at God. He had chosen to keep living out of spite, but he refused to do it through the terms set out by the killing game.
And that meant that if he wanted to experience any of those simple, lovely dreams, he was going to have to get everyone out of this alive.

Albedo looked up, past the stacked up apartments, past the criss-crossing electric wires, past the red windows and the fragrant smoke wafting from them. The electro shield holding this tiny city together flickered purple over them, but beyond it was an open, deep blue night sky. He could even see the crescent moon.
This really wasn’t New Khaenri’ah. He’d never see New Khaenri’ah again. That horrible, dirty, hateful city full of awful people and tyrannical synthetic control enforcers and brothels where they trafficked little girls and... And two of the people who he loved the most in the whole world.

The most fucked up part is that he doesn’t really have a choice. He flexes his fingers, and fantasizes about a reality where this was a decision. Where saying ‘dare’ wouldn’t be signing a suicide note.

“I love you.” Hasegawa murmured, his foggy windowed gaze finding the pair of panicked poppy red eyes right above him. He was smiling, blood lazily oozing from his stomach. The wound Kamimura was fighting with, pressing on, desperate to keep steady while Tsuno ran to the med bay.
“What?” He had asked. Dumbly. Stupidly. Fucking moronically, he just... stared. At Hasegawa’s dying eyes. Hasegawa, who didn’t speak again. The last words he ever heard- if his ears heard anything at all- an unanswered question. Unfulfilled inquiry.
