There was dried blood all over herself, clumps matting her short, burnt hair. The thick, red liquid dyed her clothing. Her head, her heart, and her soul felt hollow without the cursed energy she had previously held, even if it was a very small amount. It was a reminder that Mai was gone and had taken the last remnants of herself with her. The loss of Mai was still fresh in her mind, and in her body’s senses.”

The corners of his eyes prickle with intolerable sharpness. Pressure in his sinuses intensifies alongside the aching lump in his throat.
