Summary
It’s a rare thing. To have a 96 line up with the weekend, Chris going on a trip with his best friend’s family, and absolutely no responsibilities, all at once. The checklist on the fridge is crossed off completely: groceries bought on their last 24, laundry done the same day, house vacuumed last night while dinner was on its way via the magic of delivery, much to Buck’s complaints of it being too late for such things.
Eddie closes his eyes against the soft morning light. He presses his forehead to Buck’s bare shoulder, slides an arm across his stomach, presses in close, just because he can. Buck always smells good in the morning, like soap and shampoo and clean sweat, a little like the laundry detergent that claims to be unscented for sensitive skin but still has a definite scent, especially on towels and sheets. He smells like home, and everything in Eddie loves him so much it almost hurts.

“Buck—”
“I’m serious. That rearview mirror has lived through so many angles and lives in the past six minutes that it’s about to start recounting its first-hand experience on the Titanic.”
Just for that, Eddie reaches up between them and tweaks the mirror again. A ray of sunlight hits it and bounces across Buck’s eyeline. Buck’s face scrunches up as he rushes to shield his forehead with one hand. It does not remind Eddie whatsoever of a small, bashful dog hiding behind its soft paw, because that would be deranged. He twists the mirror back into position.
“The Titanic probably would have gotten us to Nashville better than this truck.”
Buck’s indignant squawk rings out in time with the turnover of the engine as Eddie hits the ignition.

Summary
It’s been a long time since Buck has felt the chill of a Pennsylvania winter.
Even when he’d been in his wandering era, never staying anywhere longer than a handful of months, he’d spent most winters somewhere warm. Florida, Texas, Peru, Georgia. Places the snow didn’t usually touch, and even the coldest days were closer to the springs he grew up with than what he would actually call winter.
He’d thought he missed it, honestly. A decade in LA had him pining for snow, for the cold silence of a nor’easter, the way a forest feels when it’s blanketed in so much snow that you’d have to dig to get your fingers in the dirt.
It feels different from how he remembered. The cold is…sharper. It stings against his skin, makes his lips numb and his ears burn. He’s pretty sure he no longer owns a winter hat that’s actually warm and not just a fashion statement. He has a snowboarding helmet, but, well…
It wouldn’t have been right.

When they land on the couch, beers in hand, Eddie’s face almost hurts from smiling. He’d known that he missed this, but hadn’t realized how much until he doesn’t have to miss it anymore.
“Oh! I have a surprise for you,” Buck says out of nowhere, cutting himself off in the middle of a sentence about his neighbor’s ugly garden decor. His smile, which had been bright and easy a second ago, turns sharp and teasing, and Eddie knows that Buck is about to do something stupid. “I was bored this afternoon.” He turns on the TV and starts fiddling with his phone. Eddie knows it’s going to be something ridiculous and over the top, because it’s Buck, but he absolutely is not prepared for what pops up on the TV when Buck connects his phone.
“Jesus Christ, Buck.”
Buck has the audacity to laugh in Eddie’s, now flaming red, face.
“Sex education is important!” He says cheerfully. “Ahem. Pay attention, there’s a quiz at the end!”

He’s not stupid. It took him some time — years — but Eddie’s half certain that, should his patience snap one day, should he lean in across the way one night when it’s just the two of them, should he palm at Buck’s jaw to bring his face closer and kiss him on the mouth, Buck would kiss him back. That’s not the problem.
The problem is that Eddie’s gonna ruin it.
He’s ruined every other romantic relationship in his life. If it happens with Buck, Eddie knows neither of them will come back from it.
These days, he’s content with having Buck the way he does now. He may succumb to weakness, sometimes, like he just did in the kitchen, holding Buck like that, but Eddie’s willpower is the stuff of legend. He’s happy with his place in Buck’s life. He can play the part of codependent best friend, dad who stepped up, platonic soulmate.
The main issue here, really, hindsight twenty-twenty and all, is that Eddie really misses being a husband.

It’s almost like — like Buck’s holding a possible thing in his hands, fragile and fledgling, born too early. It’s not the first time he’s felt this way, with Eddie. It’s happened before, mostly in kitchens.

The corner of Eddie’s mouth lifts. There, Buck supposes, is his answer.
“Yeah. Honeymooners, huh? Should we tell him about our disaster of a trip?”
His stomach lurches. God. Eddie’s taking this in stride; Buck should be thankful for it. Instead, he’s afraid he’ll be sick all over their shoes.

“Stubble’s kinda crazy,” Buck says, “And it actually kinda drives me crazy. I didn’t think I’d be into that, you know? But it’s cool. Like, he’s a man, you know?”
Hen whoops and claps him on the back. “That is nasty and I do not know, but I’m happy for you.”
Buck grins. “Sometimes I kinda feel small. Which has, like, never happened before.”
“Wow,” Chim says dryly, “Wonder what that’s like.”
“It’s just like, you know, even though it doesn’t feel as good, there are still all these new things that I didn’t expect I’d like so much.”
Hen frowns at him. “What do you mean, doesn’t feel as good?”
Buck shrugs. “Well, you know, like, it can kinda hurt sometimes.”
All at once, Eddie, Chim, and Maddie speak, their voices overlapping: “Can you specify it?” “Wait, it hurts?” “Buck, he’s hurting you?”
They’re all sitting forward in their seats now, and Buck scrambles to defuse the situation.
“No! No, I mean, it doesn’t, like, hurt hurt, it’s just, like, ouch! Y’know! Like, normal. Just… uncomfortable. Sometimes.”

“I know, I know,” he mumbles, burying his face in his hands.
“And here I was thinking you’d spent the night in his bed when you weren’t home by eleven.”
Buck slowly lifts his head. “Well…”
Athena snorts. “You’re kidding.”
“Friends can share a bed,” Buck says in an attempt to justify the situation. “Eddie and I shared a bed in quarantine, it’s not weird.”

“That’s fine, we can share the bed,” Eddie says without thinking, but then figures he may as well double down. “I don’t know why we haven’t been sharing the whole time. It makes sense, don’t you think?” Buck stares at him in response, and Eddie waits patiently, but Buck appears to be frozen. “Spray,” Eddie reminds him, and Buck jerks back into action.
“Right,” Buck says, spraying the window erratically. “Makes sense. For us to share a bed. Because you don’t want me to move out.”
“Exactly.” Eddie wipes. Buck sprays. “So, we’ll talk tonight, yeah?”
“About—oh, right. You wanted to talk later,” Buck says, seemingly reminding himself of Eddie’s earlier request. “It’s not bad, is it? You’re acting weird.”

So in the middle of Eddie’s dining room, with his brain to mouth filter non-existent (as per usual), Buck blurts out, “Marry me.”
Eddie sits straight up, looking at him with eyes wide as saucers.
“Excuse me?”
“W-well, just think about it. If we get married I can add you and Chris to my insurance policy and that solves your problem.”
Eddie’s mouth forms a perfect little ‘o’. Buck waits patiently for the floor to open up and swallow him whole.
When the ground doesn’t do as he’d hoped he realizes he has to say something else. “Obviously, w-we don’t have to,” he’s quick to assure. “But if we did it would be platonic, of course, because you’re straight and–” he pauses, praying for another rogue stroke of lightning. Anything to put him out of his misery right now. “-and like I know that I’m bi now, but this wouldn’t be like that y’know? It would just be two friends helping each other out.” He’s rambling, the words won’t stop tumbling out. “Like a friends with benefits type situation! E-except you know not those kinds of benefits! Like actual benefits! Health and dental.”
