“I’m staying with Mom tonight,” Henry says over the phone, his voice obscured by poor reception. “Maybe for the rest of the week. She shouldn’t be alone and I’ve really missed her.” Emma doesn’t expect to feel so lost and the baby is shrieking intermittently and she tosses and turns and can’t sleep and before she knows it, she has boots and a jacket on over her pyjamas and she’s in the bug.
Emma seeks forgiveness and chooses herself and comes to terms with a great many things. Post-episode feelings blergh.

Summary
Set roughly during "The Tower" (3x14) in the Missing Year, Snow accompanies Regina to her family's estate to search for clues about Zelena. The princess is loathe to admit it, but so many events are weighing on her mind—her impending pregnancy, her husband's strange reaction to it, and the fact that she's pretty sure that both he and Regina are lying to her about something or another, but even still, she clings to hope.
"She has to hold on to that elusive but ever shining ideal no matter what; it’s her only defense against the darkness, against the voices that threaten to swirl in her head and tell her that she isn’t enough, that she’s always been a failure, and she’ll never be a good mother. It’s weird, the way things start working in Emma’s mind. It’s something about the photo in the book that Henry brings downstairs– something about the way they’re drawn, about the way Regina cocks her head and raises an eyebrow at her, about the fact that Emma and Regina are looking at each other in the first place. Her arm is around Hook’s and she can’t pull it out without getting stares but it’s suddenly too warm, too constricting, and there are these two women in the book and they’re kissing and it’s– it’s important.

Maybe if they’d done this right– if Cora hadn’t come to frame Regina, if Gold hadn’t summoned her to New York, if they’d stood strong instead of bending to all the outside forces sabotaging them– if they’d done this right, that nightmare of a true love’s kiss might have made a bit more sense.
Her hands are still wrapped around Regina’s and her eyes must belie some of the conflict within her– the impossible maybes swimming through her mind– because Regina leans forward, crosses the gulf between them and presses her lips to Emma’s, quick and uncertain.

It had been a simple dare, one that had made sense when Emma had been two drinks away from passing out. She doesn’t know what exactly Ruby had done to bind it– is still very new to magic as a real thing, flowing through Storybrooke– but it’s now a dare she can’t back off on.
Ruby had laid out the rules, more and more smug as she had gone on. “So if Regina wears a red dress, you have to pick a fight with her.” Emma hadn’t questioned that one. “But if she wears blue, you have to give her a compliment. And if she wears grey, you gotta call her Your Majesty.” She’d been a little drunk, too, enough that she’d gotten bold. “Light colors mean you have to tell her whatever’s on your mind. Whatever.” Her eyes had narrowed in ominous delight. “And for black…for black, you have to flirt with her.”

Soulmates are for the privileged few, the good, the fairytale heroes. Soulmates are for love stories, and Regina’s love has only ended in pain and loss. A soulmate would be a waste of her ability, and she persuades herself of it so vehemently that she can stand naked in her castle, surrounded by mirrors, and pretend that she isn’t searching for a tattoo on her skin anymore.
She casts a curse, rides to a castle to find a savior, and wakes up in a strange house that is to be home from now on. She’s won, and it’s never felt so fitting.
When she dresses for her first day as mayor, she sees it: an intricate mark against the tan skin just beneath her breast, shaped like a sunburst with a web woven through it. It’s a new world, it’s a new destiny, and she touches her mark and is as afraid as she is wondering.
