“Sit down,” he said, not quite a command but not an ask either. For a little while, Clark said nothing. Eventually, he spoke, and the words came out flat, stripped of their usual gentle buffering.
“You don’t want to hear this.”
Bruce shrugged. “I asked.”
Clark fixed his gaze on the far wall, as if it would yield some kind of answer. Then, in the barest voice, he said, “It’s not human.”
“I know you're not. I don't care.”
Clark stared at the seam in the wall.
“The first time I figured out what it was, I was nineteen. There’s an archive at the Fortress—basically a biological index. My father, or the AI that thinks it’s him, set it up to explain what would happen as I developed.” He tried to smile, but his face wouldn’t do it. “He called it biological advancement superior to any other. The next three pages said otherwise.”Series
