Since he was a young boy, he had always had a malady of the nerves, one that only his father had been able to relieve him of, if only temporarily. When Edmund had died, it had, for lack of a better term, crushed him. Now, however, he had found someone who could both challenge him and relax him like Edmund had been able to. He was not saying that Kate would ever replace Edmund, because the thought was incomprehensible; rather, he was saying that Kate had become important to him.

Summary
Anthony is not prepared for the maelstrom that erupts inside him. Dorset, again? At a soiree that Anthony himself had not been invited to, and yet Miss Sharma had extended an invitation to Thomas Dorset - a man who had played her false! - ignoring, of course, that this had been entirely at Anthony’s own request.
He feels hot and cold all over. Is this confirmation, then, that Dorset is earnestly pursuing Miss Sharma? It will not do. He is sure they are ill-suited to each other.
or: Dorset starts to court Kate in earnest after the races. Anthony, predictably, takes this incredibly badly. Things unravel from there.

Summary
Lord Bridgerton was once a dark lord who ruled the people of his city by channelling dark and tainted threads of power. The only way to save him had been to sew a dark mark upon his skin, which shuttered the full extent of his abilities. After all his trials, Anthony feared he may have lost his soul in the process.
Kathani Sharma lived most of her life in the cavernous Underdark until forced to the surface so that her sister could find an adept to be apprenticed to.
They meet in the ancient city of Lund, though it may be too late to save Anthony’s soul.

“I know who you are,” she said, her voice cruel. “Lord Bridgerton, are you not?”
Biting the inside of his cheek, Anthony realised he did not wish to admit it.
“You who terrorised this city a few years ago?” She said. “And yet you still walk free?”
“I saved this place from the blight!” Anthony knew full well that his atrocities after that far outweighed any good he had ever done.
The woman merely laughed and started to walk away. Unable to let it go, he followed, not sure what he could say or do, just knowing that she stirred something inside of him, and if she walked away, he would probably never see her again.

Anthony doesn’t know what to make of this feeling. He desires her, yes, but along with the itch to bite, to drink, comes a strange sort of ache in his not-so-active heart. He can sense her interest, her care - she’d come all the way out to the country to ask him, personally, about his home, and now that she’s here, he doesn’t want her to leave.
He wonders if she feels the same.
