Currently ON PAUSE. As posted to tumblr, my work currently has me working with many kids similar to Steve and Bucky's stories and it's been a lot to carry, so right now I don't feel able to do justice by this story. I am hoping that at some point in the future I will have to space to give these boys the happy endings they deserve. This felt like a test. Perhaps they were trying to see how mentally unstable their Captain was. Luckily, he could, in full honesty, reassure them that he was not weak. He had a strong lock on his emotions and hadn’t even cried once since he unfroze. He could operate at full capacity in this century despite not knowing what a ‘Rom-Com’ is.
“Not even once.”
Steve missed the furrowed brows, and concerned looks shot around the room. He tried his best to isolate himself in the Avengers Tower. If anyone could expose his vulnerability, it was this team. S.H.I.E.L.D. had been less of a threat because Fury was more than willing to believe whatever Steve told him as long as he got results. This team of super spies, geniuses, and gods? They had no reason to sit back and allow an incompetent and weak man to lead them. It was necessary to avoid allowing them to see the cracks in his armor, or they may bench him. If Steve got benched, there was nothing left for him in this century.

Bucky’s heart pounded a violent tattoo beneath his chest. He knew what he needed to say, but he didn’t know if he’d be able to. There was a reason he hadn’t before. But he thought of Steve laying in hospital beds, tubes and wires attached to him and machines blinking. He’d seen the rhythm of Steve’s heart so many times he could picture it when he heard it.
“Captain America or me, Steve. You can’t have both. Not anymore.”
